3D Printing Process - Personalized Keychain

It's Maker Space Monday! Today we're sharing the second half of the 3D Printing process with Mr. Chris, our Maker Space Educator. Last time, he showed you how to design your own personalized keychain using the free web based program, Tinkercad. Now he shows you how to prepare the file for printing and how the printer takes that file and turns it into a physical object.

Did you do this at home? Go to www.LancasterScienceFactory.org/upload to send us your design. We can print it for you with convenient curbside pickup!

Sensory Play Bins - The Lancaster Science Factory

Happy Friday! It's time for Science in 10 Steps or Less! Today, our STEM Educator, Miss Angel, shares a quick and easy sensory play bin that she likes to use in our PASTE Pre-K classes. The trick is to create a mixture with more soap bubbles than water.

Sensory bins assist in brain development and motor skills. They can also be a great way for kids to decompress and relieve stress. Follow the link to see the full activity and the the science of sensory play.

Donate Now! - The Lancaster Science Factory

Today the Lancaster Science Factory is participating in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity and giving, created as an emergency response to benefit non-profits impacted by the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

As we enter our third month of closure, the Science Factory is missing out on our entire field trip season, a major source of revenue, for the first time in our history. With the current State-mandated closure of all nonessential businesses, the Science Factory is experiencing an immediate and severe financial shortfall of $150,000. I am asking you to please donate today to The Science Factory Resiliency Fund to ensure our mission to inspire and educate can survive this crisis.

Throughout the Science Factory’s short history, we have taken a very disciplined approach to managing the museum’s finances. Compared to many museums similar in size, The Science Factory relies on a large portion of earned revenue – 60 percent – for its annual operating budget (from visitor admissions, camps, school field trips, memberships, etc). Your generous philanthropic support helps provide the other 40 percent we need to run our non-profit and to make our facility accessible to all.

Together, under normal circumstances, these sources of revenue make it possible to deliver exciting hands-on science programs and exhibits to 60,000 lifelong learners each year. However, we are unable to depend on that earned revenue right now.

Your financial support today will help fill a critical funding gap in our earned revenue streams that the Science Factory needs to survive the challenges created by this unforeseen crisis. Please make a gift of whatever amount you can to ensure our region’s growing community of lifelong learners will NEVER stop learning about science at the Science Factory.

We need your help now more than ever. And with your support, we can come back from this stronger than ever!

Science in 10 Steps or Less!

Today's project is a simple way to demonstrate polarity of substances AND flex your creative muscles! To do crayon-resist art you'll need paper (construction works best), a white crayon, watercolor paint, a small brush, and water.

Draw any design you'd like using the white crayon and then paint over your drawing with the watercolor paint. Your design shows through like a secret message because the wax of the crayons repels the water.

We'd love to see the original art you can make with this experiment! Tag us for a chance to be featured on our page. Read more about the science of polarity at www.LancasterScienceFactory.org/at-home-resources

Violet Lemonade – Bakers Brigade

Roses are red and violets are blue... with a little science, see what you can do! We love this fun and easy violet lemonade experiment from Baker's Brigade. You can find these instructions as well as many other resources for hands-on science at home at: www.LancasterScienceFactory.org/at-home-resources

Did you do this experiment? Show us how it turned out in the comments below!

This violet lemonade is so wonderful. It's just the right amount of tart and sweet. And if you add the optional rosewater, it's also pinkies-up elegant. But the color is what makes it so special.

Making a charitable donation to the Lancaster Science Factory is now easier and more rewarding than ever. New rules associated with the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act allow you to deduct a donation of up to $300 right from the top of your taxable income in 2020, even if you don't itemize your deductions. If you DO itemize, CARES Act lifts limitations of charitable contributions from the previous 60% of adjusted gross income to 100%.

Visit www.LancasterScienceFactory.org/donate-now to contribute today. Thank you for supporting hands-on STEM education in our community. We can't wait to welcome you back to the Science Factory as soon as we can!

DO TRY THIS AT HOME: This simple trick demonstrates the powerful force of air pressure! You’ll need a glass or jar, some water, and a card big enough to cover the glass. Fill the glass part way with water. Place the card on the mouth of the glass and push it down against the rim with your palm. Slowly invert the glass and take your hand away. Tada! 03/16/2020

The Lancaster Science Factory is temporarily closed during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The health and wellbeing of our visitors, staff, and volunteers is our highest priority. We will continue to follow recommended guidelines to protect our community, revising our plans in response to the changing situation.

All events and programming during this time have been canceled or postponed. Our team is available by phone and email to reschedule, accept reservations, and confirm cancellations. We will extend all memberships by the amount of time that we are closed.

We’re here to help. The Science Factory knows that parents need educational resources to help keep kids engaged in STEM learning while they’re at home. Check out our at-home resources to spark learning and hands-on STEM play!

As we look to the scientists to provide us with the facts about this outbreak, we are reminded of just how essential science education is to our community. If you agree, we hope that you will consider making a gift to our nonprofit institution during this difficult and unprecedented time.

Another way to help support the Science Factory today is by purchasing a Gift Certificate toward a future visit.

Please visit www.LancasterScienceFactory.org for more information, and follow us on social media for the latest updates and at-home science activities. We look forward to welcoming you back to the museum soon!

Hi. Will be in the area with a 2yo later this spring. I can't tell from the website if there are activities appropriate for young toddlers or not. Should the factory make our list of fun things to do with him or not? Thank you
Is it free on Friday’s?
Tracey Anne Millie Elizabeth this looks cool!
I heard you have free admission on the first Friday of each month? Is this accurate?
Do they have a gift shop? Their website doesn’t mention one.
What's the cost to enter the science factory itself and are there daily activities for kids? Tia
