Lancaster Virginia Historical Society

Lancaster Virginia Historical Society History and Genealogy Center for Lancaster and Northern Neck VA with Museum and Research Library. MAILING ADDRESS: PO BOX 97, LANCASTER VA 22503.

Founded in 1958, our nonprofit, volunteer-based historical organization was originally named in honor of Mary Ball Washington who was born in Lancaster County and became the mother of George Washington. We now operate as the Lancaster Virginia Historical Society. Our museum complex has changing exhibits on local topics and includes the 1797 Clerk of Court Office, 1820s Old Jail, and c. 1830 Lancas

ter House, surrounding the original courthouse green from when the county seat was established here in 1742. (Note: Mary Ball did not live at this site! The research library contains about 10,000 books, periodicals, and files with information on county court records, birth/death/marriage records, family genealogies, regional history subjects, and more. Visit www.LancasterVaHistory.org to search the library card catalog, buy gift shop/bookstore items, and find educational events and virtual programs.

Don't blame them, because its [sic] been such a long time since they had a real vacation." Surnames in the society doings include Cox, Lawson, Cundiff, Pierce, Efford, Harper, Jones, Pittman, Yerby, Burton, and Lee. (From the Rappahannock Record).

100 Years Ago Today: May 20, 1926. Some 35, 000 young men across the country were offered an all-expenses-paid month-long "vacation" at Citizen's Military Training Camps. Lancaster wanted to meet its quota of sending five 17-to-24-years-olds to a CMTC at Fort Eustis, VA. Perhaps a later newspaper article will indicate who attended? "Transportation and expenses are paid; uniforms, equipment, and supplies furnished. The camps are located in the healthiest and in many cases the most beautiful spots in the areas. An abundance of healthful, well cooked food, comfortable quarters, and beds are provided.... Sport, amusements, physical exercises, military drill, tactics, marksmanship, baseball, football, swimming, wrestling, boxing, hikes, fill the days from reveille to taps." (From the Rappahannock Record)

100 Years Ago Today: May 13, 1926. News from Morattico described "one of the greatest forest fires to visit this section in recent years" starting near Litwalton and spreading almost to the Somers' Belle Isle farm, causing thousands of dollars of damage to farms, homes, and wooded properties of C. C. Wheat, Chastine Bromleys, Sullivan Sanders, F. G. Lankford, F. W. Lewis, Henry Brown, and others. (From the Rappahannock Record. The second image showing Dr. Law is from a later issue in June)

1851 history in Front Royal VA. Documents like this show enslaved persons treated as property, but by looking deeper between the lines, we can elevate the humanity of individuals like F***y and think about her life as a talented cook and mother.

Sale on kitchen equipment and enslaved people. **There are very few records about enslaved people. Most of their names and stories are lost to us. So when we know the name of a cook, itโ€™s important to see it. Here in this document we see the name of a cook and the names of her children. You can also see some of the equipment she used.

Try to see this document as a piece of history that so easily could have been lost. Most of them were. Think about what F***y might have cooked and what she might have thought about. Itโ€™s important to say her name, because most of the names are gone.**
