"TWO-DIMENSIONAL SPACE, THREE-DIMENSIONAL SPACE"
A shape is a two-dimensional area that is defined in some way. It could be by a line, color, texture, or a variety of other ways. There are two types of shapes: Geometric and freeform (organic).
Two-dimensional art consists of painting, drawings, prints, and photographs, which differ from each other primarily in the technique of their ex*****on. Two-dimensional art, having its elements organized in terms of a flat surface, especially emphasizes the vertical and horizontal character of the picture's plane.
Three-dimensional art is observed in terms of its height, width, and depth. It is not flat like two-dimensional art. Pottery and sculpture are examples.
Three-dimensional art is comprised of three main elements: Balance, Proportion, and Rhythm.
NOTE: Balance- Refers to visual balance.
Proportion- Refers to the various parts of the three-dimensional object.
Rhythm- Is the repetition of line or shape within the overall form.

"Expressive Qualities of Line"
The element "line" is considered by most to be the most basic element of art. It has an almost infinite number of uses when it comes to the creation of artwork. One of the most common uses of a line is to show the viewer where an object or parts of an object end. These types of lines are called contour lines, but are most commonly called "outlines". A line can also convey movement either through repetition or by showing lines coming off the surface of an object that is moving. A line can also create the illusion of form through hatching or cross-hatching.
NOTE: Information on types of lines can be found in classes #2 through # 10

"Gestural Drawing"
Gestural drawing is a loose form of sketching that attempts to capture your subject's basic form and express movement. It is a form of expression that is neither abstract nor realistic. It is, simply, a quick sketch in which your hand follows your eyes.
NOTE: When creating a gesture drawing, you should draw not what the thing looks like, but what it is doing.

Emphasis/Focus
Emphasis (or focus) gives importance or dominance (weight) to some feature or features of an artist's work; sometimes singled out, stressed, or drawn attention to by means of contrast, anomaly, or for aesthetic impact.
It is a way of combining elements to stress the differences between these elements and to create one or more centers of interest in a work. Often, emphasized elements are used to direct and focus attention on the most important parts of a composition - its focal point.
NOTE: A design lacking emphasis may result in monotony. The viewer's eye ultimately wants to rest on the "most important thing" or focal point in an artist's work; otherwise, the eye feels lost, wandering around in space.
