F&M Alumni Arts Review

F&M Alumni Arts Review The AAR publishes the literary and fine art of F&M Alumni These include the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

The F&M Alumni Arts Review is a printed publication, with a Web presence, which presents literary and visual works by Franklin & Marshall alumni. It’s an “arts” review for a reason: F&M is proud that as a College it continues the fine tradition of a classic liberal arts education. The word "arts" in this case does not just mean the fine arts, or the literary arts; rather, it refers to educational

disciplines that are considered essential if one is to be an effective citizen of the world. As alumni of F&M, you no doubt engaged in many forms of these “arts" during your time with the College. In the process, you delved—briefly or lengthily—into a fine art or a dramatic art or a literary art. Above all, you learned to express yourself and your ideas effectively. Many of you are still doing so, and many of you may have been longing for an opportunity to re-engage with the invigoration such explorations offer. These expressions may manifest as artwork or in various written forms: stories, essays, poetry, even plays. If that’s the case, we hope you will consider submitting your work to the F&M Alumni Arts Review. We also hope the Review will keep you engaged, or will re-engage you with your alma mater. Whether you are an aspiring writer/artist, an established one, or simply want to try your hand at publication, we are most interested in seeing and reading your work. In our current issue, the theme is SHIFT. It’s a concept that can be broadly applied, and we look forward to seeing your particular interpretation.

The November 22 deadline for submissions to Volume V: SIGNS is fast approaching! To help prompt some flashes of inspiration or final editing tweaks, here's the opening to Mark Miller's hilarious and heartwarming essay, "'Til Love Do Us Part."

"I'm such a fan of romantic comedies that from the moment Jessica and I met, I realized our relationship, like so many depicted in those movies, was not a match made in soul mate heaven. Not even soul mate heaven adjacent."

Get your week off to a great start with a brief poetry break, courtesy of Sydney Pierce's thought provoking poem, "Coming West." This beautiful piece is published in EDGE, and we hope it gets you thinking about Volume V: SIGNS.

These mountains rise up
as my ancestors, raised on
pine and fire ash above an ocean
of a plain, ancient fog drifting like smoke
from hard scrub gullies.
Coming West feels like arriving
at the edge, a great border
beyond which—sky. A confrontation.
Coming West is a breaking
open.

I don't believe
in God, but I believe he has been here
with his hands in the earth, I believe
I have enough of sadness.
Let me wash my face
in the ashes;
I come back here to mourn.

For this week's feature, take a moment to read the opening lines of Kelly Schenke's powerful piece, "Object-Memory-Gift."

"In my family, we pass things on. Tables, chairs, jelly cupboards, these are the physical representations of memory; and when memory fades, the objects remain. I can run my hands over the edges of these things; feel the rough spots, the scratches, the evidence of everyday life. The other week, my great aunt and uncle presented me with a gift..."
