Frank Netter used a variety of media, but for his medical illustrations, he preferred opaque watercolor, or gouache. He felt this medium allowed him to render careful detail and create broad, colorful effects. He carefully planned each illustration and asked himself, “What is the message of the picture?”

His process would start with a number 2 pencil and thin tracing paper. He would roughly lay out the sketch, then transfer it to a 15” x 20” illustration board. After the transfer was complete, Frank began to paint. His porcelain palette held his colors and he used a wet brush to pick up pigments for his design. After examining his work and touching up any smudges or undesired marks, he signed “F. Netter, MD.”
