This past Friday we celebrated the poets whose work is displayed throughout the museum for April & May. The poems were written by Buchanan Elementary 5th graders, during a tour of the museum led by Lancaster's former poet Laureate, Barbara Buckman Strasko as part of Poetry Paths. Visitors can find the exhibit's 15 poems all around the museum through the end of May. Here are some photos of the poets with their work, families, and teachers!

In collaboration with the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin and Marshall College, the North Museum of Nature and Science is excited to showcase its STEAM Art Gallery (where science meets art) during First Friday.

On February 1, the museum will be open from 5 - 8 pm and will feature art exhibits from such artists as Kathy Rothenberger, Kevin Witman, Matt Dougherty and Lancaster Country Day High School. Be mesmerized by art inspired by flora, fauna and the seas; acrylic paintings exploring bird life at the beach; and marvel at astronomy photographs printed on metal.

After exploring the art gallery at North Museum of Nature and Science, venture over to the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin and Marshall College to experience their first ever scavenger hunt in addition to their exhibitions.

01/17/2019

There will be a total lunar eclipse this weekend - in fact, it's the first one visible on the east coast from start to finish since 2015! Let's hope that the skies will be clear on Sunday night!

If you want to learn more about this particular event and eclipses in general, be sure to join us for our Night Sky Tours on this upcoming Saturday, Sunday, and Monday!

Don't miss the first Total Lunar Eclipse visible on the East Coast from start to finish since 2015. The eclipse will be visible from about 10:36 pm on January 20 to 3:48 am on January 21.

Even though the eclipse starts at 10:36 pm one won't see an obvious difference with the moon's appearance, just a slight darkening of the moon. It isn't until about 11:34 pm when we start seeing some partial phasing of the moon.

The highlight of the eclipse is totality, when the moon is completely within Earth's shadow. At this time, the moon will turn reddish in color. Totality begins at 12:41 am.

So set those alarms or make a night of it. The next time the East Coast gets to see a Total Lunar Ecipse from start to finish isn't until 2022. If you can see the moon, you can safely observe the eclipse. Granted we're cloud free.

For an animation of the eclipse visit http://shadowandsubstance.com/

The photograph of the Lunar Eclipse from 2010 is from former North Museum Planetarium Educator Kevin Witman, who currently has his astrophotography exhibit on display at the Museum. Come check it out.

Happy New Years Eve!

Here's a snapshot of our year in review - 2018 has been an eventful year for the North Museum!

We've welcomed our baby dragons, everglades rat snakes, and toads to our Live Animal Room!
We launched STEM Storytimes and expanded on our early childhood education program, Little Explorers & Me!
This year we debuted a brand new planterium show, Cosmic Journeys: Destination Mars, which was produced in-house by one of our very dedicated and talented volunteers, Tommy!
We tried something different this year and brought the museum to life after hours in Night at the Museum!

This is just a short list of all the amazing things that happened here in 2018, and it's possible thanks to all of YOU! Thank you so much to all of our visitors, members, volunteers, and donors! We wouldn't be the museum and community that we are without you.

We're excited for what 2019 has in store for us!
If you want to help us expand on bringing you more interactive programs and exhibits, please consider donating. Your contributions allow us to offer educational programs to the public for free!

Our hot chocolate bar for the Polar Express was generously provided by our neighbors down the street, Splits & Giggles Cafe! We'd like to thank Dave and his team for bringing the cocoa, all the toppings, as well as help with serving the delicious beverage!

Splits and Giggles is only two blocks away from the museum down on West Lemon Street! If hot chocolate isn't your cup of tea, they have plenty of options including ice cream, sandwiches, and more! They're one of our favorite places to visit when we're craving something sweet!

We'd like to extend a huge THANK YOU to our sponsor this weekend, Splits & Giggles Cafe for providing our hot chocolate bar! They kindly brought the cocoa and all the toppings in addition to providing a staff member to tend the bar! They will be here again tomorrow for the second day of the Polar Express!

Is hot chocolate not your cup of tea? Stop by their shop, 2 blocks from the museum, on West Lemon Street for ice cream, soup, sandwiches, and more! A visit to our friends for a sweet treat is a great way to end the day!

Happy Winter Soltice, first day of winter, and the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission!
12/21/2018

Happy Winter Soltice, first day of winter, and the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission!

Today marks the 50th anniversary of when astronauts first orbited the moon. James Lovell, William Anders and Frank Borman had no way of knowing that when they piled into their capsule tucked atop a Saturn V rocket on a Florida launchpad. Three hours later, they would be on their way to space and to becoming the first three humans to fly around the moon.

Apollo 8 was the second manned spaceflight mission in the United States Apollo space program. The crew was launched on December 21, 1968, and became the first manned spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit, reach the Moon, orbit it, and safely return.

The “Smithsonian’s Home in Pittsburgh” is one of just four museums in the nation to host Destination Moon, which takes visitors on an in-depth exploration of the Apollo 11 mission, the birth of the American space program, and the space race. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a national treasure in Pittsburgh – the Command Module Columbia. The only portion of the Apollo 11 spacecraft to complete the first mission to land a man on the Moon and safely return him to Earth.
