Catherine “Kit” Klein of Buffalo, New York, was a standout speed skater in the 1930s. At the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, she won the 1,500-meter event and earned bronze in the 500 meters, when women’s speed skating was still a demonstration sport.

After competing in the 1936 Winter Olympics, Klein retired from competitive skating and famously threw her speed skates overboard during her voyage home. A few years later she performed with the Ice Follies.

This 1939 photograph from the Lake Placid Olympic Museum collection, published in the Winkler County News, shows Klein playfully posing for a photo, with the caption: “Cutting A Figure In The Air. Miami, FLA- Kit Klein, World's Champion figure skater, takes time off from Miami's new Ice Palace to cut a figure in aviation circles. Perhaps she's tuning up for the All-American air maneuvers."

In 1932, Lake Placid made history as the first U.S. host of the Olympic Winter Games. ❄️🏅

This National Host ribbon is a small piece of that historic moment when athletes and visitors from around the world came to the Adirondacks for America’s first Winter Olympics.

More than 90 years later, Lake Placid’s Olympic legacy continues!

🥇 Three Races. Three Gold Medals. One Historic Olympic Games.

At the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, Soviet cross-country skier Nikolay Zimyatov delivered one of the most dominant performances of the Games.

Competing for the USSR, Zimyatov captured three gold medals in Lake Placid:

🥇 30 km
🥇 50 km
🥇 4 × 10 km Relay

Four years later in Sarajevo, Zimyatov successfully defended his Olympic title in the 30 km and added a silver medal in the relay.

But it was here in Lake Placid in 1980 that Zimyatov made Olympic history, leaving the Adirondacks with three gold medals and a place among cross-country skiing’s greats.

We had so much fun yesterday at the Saratoga Race Course for Adirondack Day! 🏇

Visitors had the chance to hold the 2024 Paris Olympic torch while learning about the Olympic Movement and what’s new at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. We also loved connecting with fellow Adirondack organizations and celebrating all that makes our region so special.

: Meet Neve and Gliz, the official mascots of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games! ❄️🧊

Neve, meaning “snow” in Italian, is a playful red snowball who represents harmony and the grace of movement. Gliz, inspired by “ghiaccio” (ice), is a blue ice cube symbolizing strength and the power of athletes.

The mascots were created through an international design contest that received 237 submissions from artists and agencies around the world. The winning design by Pedro Albuquerque was selected to bring Neve and Gliz to life as symbols celebrating the two essential ingredients of every Winter Games: snow and ice.

Pictured here is a Snow Cat 90M grooming the landing hill at the ski jumps during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Behind every unforgettable jump was a lot of hard work—including from this very cool cat.

For more than a century, Wheaties has honored champions from across the world of sports with its iconic slogan, “The Breakfast of Champions.”

While athletes appeared on Wheaties boxes as early as the 1930s and 1940s, Olympians began taking center stage in 1956, creating a decades-long tradition of celebrating those who represent the very best in sport.

In 1992, Team USA figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi was featured on the Wheaties box after making history as the first Asian American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in figure skating at the Albertville Winter Olympic Games. A two-time world champion and 1992 U.S. champion, Yamaguchi’s legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes. 🏅

Yesterday was one for the record books! 🎉

The crowd showed up in a big way yesterday as the Lake Placid Olympic Museum welcomed 866 visitors—our second-highest single-day attendance ever! 🥈 That performance knocks our previous second-place finish of 829 visitors off the podium.

But the championship record still stands... 923 visitors, set on August 9, 2024. 🥇
