We have few enough protections for our heritage sites as it is.

Damaging and substantial changes to the federal regulatory process known as Section 106 were hastily proposed with a highly irregular email vote due tomorrow, just one-week after a draft proposal was made public. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a voting member who voted no. Congressional leaders are pushing back and urging rejection, including Senator Ron Wyden (thank you!).

As a statewide partner with the National Trust, Preservation Action, National Preservation Partners Network, Restore Oregon is working quickly to develop an action plan for Oregon and what will need to happen rapidly in the next month or so as this moves forward. We are also working with our State partners on ways to support the regulatory work they must do that protects historic and cultural resources in Oregon.

For now, we ask all our readers, supporters, and all the professionals who work in the regulatory and cultural resources management sector of our field to be ready and available to help Restore Oregon in this endeavor to advocate and work in collaboration on this crisis. It is going to take all of us!

We LOVE to honor & share our Beautiful Lake Oswego Built Heritage… This Sweet Storybook Cottage on Glenmorrie is a perfect example, with a fun story too. If you have ever wanted to own a piece of history, this could be it! 🏡🗝️

“McBride named her cottage "Mole End" taken from the popular novel "The Wind In The Willows." A one-of-a-kind historic gem, this Storybook Cottage was built in 1918 by Nan McBride on the 600 acre estate of the area's first resident, P. Farnsworth Morey. Decorative period charm fills every eyeful - in the architecture, the interior and the setting. Hidden behind a tall laurel hedge, rounded garden arbors and white picket fences frame the house with its quaint shake siding, double hipped roof and multi-paned windows. Inside, arched doorways, beadboard walls, cute shelved nooks and tin metal-looking accents add vintage whimsy to the unique floor plan.”

Help Save PSU’s Low-Income Historic Housing:

You can help protect the existing low-income housing at Portland State University! Now more than ever, affordable housing is a priority in Portland. PSU has a demolition permit for two historic 1930s residence halls, Blackstone Hall and Montgomery Court.

Sitting adjacent to our historic Park Blocks, a designated National Register historic site, these buildings contribute to the cultural and architectural heritage of our downtown core and PSU's character.

Montgomery Court, formerly the Martha Washington Hotel for Self-Supporting Women, was built by the Portland Women’s Union and designed by A.E. Doyle.

The Blackstone Apartments were designed as an early model of high-quality, low-income housing by Elmer Feig for Harry Mittleman.

These buildings have provided continuous affordable housing for close to 100 years and, if retrofitted, could serve for several decades more.

There is no need to demolish these irreplaceable historic buildings to build new housing there when PSU has vacant land nearby.

You can sign the petition now to urge PSU to withdraw the demolition permit. (copy and paste the link below).
