🇳🇵 NEPAL HAS BEEN HIT BY A DEVASTATING FLOOD — ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S WORST DISASTERS
On August 26, a sudden and extremely powerful flash flood swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Nepal–Tibet border. The flood entered from the Tibetan side and rushed down the Bhote Koshi river system, destroying everything in its path.
The disaster struck around 9:00 AM, hitting areas including Timure, Syabrubesi, Mailung and Betrawati, before the floodwaters continued downstream toward Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan. (OnlineKhabar)
💔 The human loss is devastating.
Reports initially confirmed 95 deaths, while later reports said the death toll had reached 157 in Nepal as more bodies were recovered. Hundreds of people remain missing, and the final death toll could rise further as rescue teams reach areas buried under mud and debris. (The Kathmandu Post)
🚨 Hundreds of people are still unaccounted for.
Nepal’s Tourism Board reported hundreds of tourists out of contact, including foreign nationals and Nepali travellers. Among those reported missing were people from India, the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, Malaysia and several other countries. (Nepal News)
The disaster also affected security personnel. 85 security personnel—including members of the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force—were initially reported missing. Around 60 people connected to hydropower projects were also out of contact. (The Kathmandu Post)
🏚️ Entire communities were destroyed.
Homes, hotels, shops, vehicles, roads and bridges were swept away. Major infrastructure near the Nepal–China border was badly damaged, while hydropower projects and electricity transmission infrastructure were also affected.
At least 19 motorable bridges and around 40 kilometres of roads were reported damaged. (The Kathmandu Post)
🌊 How did this terrifying flood happen?
The exact cause is still being investigated. Scientists and authorities have pointed to an ice-and-rock avalanche/landslide in the high Himalayan region, which may have suddenly released a massive amount of water and debris into the Lhende River. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was also recorded in the region around the same time, but scientists have not confirmed that the earthquake itself caused the flood. (Nepal News)
The flood came with very little warning, turning the river into a powerful wall of water, mud and rocks. People had almost no time to escape.
🇳🇵 Nepal is now facing a massive search-and-rescue operation.
Thousands of security personnel and rescue workers have been deployed, while helicopters are being used to reach people trapped in isolated areas.
But many families are still waiting for one phone call.
Many are waiting to know whether their loved ones are alive.
And for some families, that answer may never come.
💔 Nepal is mourning.
May everyone who lost their life rest in peace.
May those who are still missing be found alive.
And may strength reach every family affected by this heartbreaking disaster. 🇳🇵🙏
