Vintage European Posters

Vintage European Posters Posters originated over 100 years ago in Paris as an eye-catching way to advertise a product, show or a vacation spot. That was a decade ago.

These lithographs showed striking, humorous or simply beautiful images intended to attract the public’s attention long enough to convey the advertiser’s message. Posters quickly
became a popular form of street art – they could be understood easily and appreciated by everyone. Though many people at the time realized that they were looking at true pieces of art, the lithographers who printed them us

ed fragile newsprint to keep printing costs down. Posters were intended to be used for a short time – usually one or two weeks – and then thrown out. Most posters were either discarded, recycled, or have simply been destroyed by the march of time. One hundred years is a long time for a piece of newsprint to last. Few survive in good condition today, and international desire for these lithographs has blossomed over the past decade. The combination of a finite quantity and ever-increasing demand has led to a fairly steady rise in poster prices. Many posters that cost between $200 and $500 in the early 1990’s now sell for between $1,000 and $10,000. Posters that survived in a quantity might sell for a fairly constant price for a few years, but, when the available quantity diminishes and dealers can no longer replace the poster easily, then watch out! The price of a good image can double very quickly. Posters have made very good investments, with the extra dividend that they add smiles to your daily life. Owner and collector, Alan Dickar, fell in love with vintage posters by accident. In 1995, while working as an economist in New York City, a friend asked him to help flip posters at an antique show. Alan was immediately captivated by the posters and the rich history they tell. He bought 77 posters from his friend and began selling them as a hobby. He soon realized that he enjoyed posters more than economics, took a leave of absence from his job, and became a full time poster dealer. In 2001, after six years of doing poster shows and lectures on both the east and west coasts, Alan came to Maui on a whim and set up a temporary gallery in the historic Old Lahaina Store building at 744 Front Street. The gallery was supposed to last two months. The collection is now one of the largest in the U.S. with over 70,000 vintage posters. The company has warehouses in France and on Maui. Alan, General Manager Franck Soler, and other long time members of the staff travel regularly, hunting for posters. The entire staff's knowledge and affection for the posters is evident to anyone who spends time in the gallery. Our philosophy is to not only find images in good condition that we can sell at very reasonable prices, but to create an environment that makes people feel welcome and comfortable within these doors. We're more than just an art gallery and antiques shop; between our staff and our clients, we're one big, quirky family, a fact that keeps many of our patrons coming back year after year. It usually starts with passing along our passion and knowledge for posters, and inevitably develops into strong and meaningful friendships outside of the business. Whether your in the gallery to buy a few posters, swap stories about the kids and family, or get advice on the best places to eat in Maui, anyone who comes in to Vintage European Posters usually comes back. This is a special fact that we attribute a large portion of our success to, and this page is dedicated to all of you, so that even if you don't make it back to the island, you can still be a part of the action, joy, and beauty that is Vintage European Posters.

https://gofund.me/e731ed7e It is with great sadness that our beloved gallery Vintage European Posters was lost in the fire in Lahaina. VEP was a fixture in Lahaina for over 23 years with a strong mission to provide something special and unique to our customers who are like family and good friends to us. For our staff it was also our second home and second family. Thankfully we are all safe which is most important but unfortunately all of our staff, except for two of us, lost their homes and all their personal belongings. We are all out of a job and Maui will likely face an economic hit for some time. We have received an incredible outpouring of kind messages and requests to help. Our loss is only one of many from the fire and there are others who not only lost their livelihood but also family members. It is said that the fires are likely to be the largest natural disaster in the state’s history. This GoFundMe was arranged by Andrea, VEP assistant manager, on behalf of our staff because I know they would never request it on their own because even in their time of loss they are thinking of how they can help others. In true aloha spirit we band together and help take care of one another and put others before ourself. I also know so many of you really want to help. Our road ahead to recovery won’t be easy. So with the utmost gratitude, we graciously accept any assistance. Our gallery now lives on amongst all of you in your homes and businesses with your treasured posters serving as a reminder of a special time in life when you visited our humble gallery and probably weren’t expecting to buy a poster of all things but fell in love with them. Many of you continued to return with every visit. We are so sorry for this loss. Thank you for your continued support, love and compassion. Funds will be distributed amongst the staff with the majority going towards those who lost everything. From Alan, Trey, Kiko, Alex, Anna, Sarah, Rhyan and Andrea, aloha and mahalo.

Friends, it is with great sadness that we have to share this news. Our gallery was lost in the fire and was one of many. If you have been watching the news then you know the destruction was extensive throughout Lahaina town. Most of historic Front Street has burned down. Many homes and businesses are gone. It has been completely heartbreaking and we are still trying to wrap our heads around it and taking information as it comes. We feel a great sense of loss but mostly a sadness for all of you who loved and cherished this shop and have made memories here. Our mission for the last 23 years was to always serve you. Thank you for all the kind messages. For our current clients, please bear with us as we continue to assess the damage and plan our next course of action. You are very much in our thoughts. Our hearts, prayers and resources go out to helping our neighbors and all those affected by the fires. Mahalo and Aloha 💙

Hi friends! Here is another iconic United Airlines poster by Joseph Feher printed 1947. See the next post on Southern California for an artist bio on Feher. Often referred to as “the first in aviation,” United Airlines has a history built upon firsts. The airline’s history also transcends through several influential decades including the 1920s, 1940s, and the 2000s. United Airlines has existed and evolved through World War II, the Civil Rights movement, the depression, and the technological innovations of the past 20 years.

United Airlines began under the name of Varney Airlines in 1926. This airline was one of two airlines created at the time by Walter T. Varney. Varney also formed Varney Speed Lines in 1934, which would later become known as Continental Airlines. The first flight in United Airlines history was piloted by Leon Cuddeback on April 6, 1926. Subsequently, the Swallow aircraft departed from Pascoe, Washington, and landed in Boise, Idaho.

A large portion of United Airlines’ company history revolves around women’s involvement in the aviation industry. In 1930, Ellen Church, suggested that United Airlines utilize the services of female flight attendants in order to create a new profession for women . The first set of flight attendants, which included Church and seven other women, were all registered nurses.

In the midst of World War II, female involvement in the aviation industry shifted from a place of service to maintenance. By the 1940s, women were employed in every aspect of the aviation industry.

United Airlines’ slogan, “First in Aviation,” refers to more than the fact that they were the first commercial airplane fleet to take to the skies. The company also experienced these famous firsts:
1936 – First flight kitchen. Passengers could enjoy a hot meal high in the sky. The first meal included a choice of fried chicken or scrambled eggs.  1937 – United Airlines was the first airline to use computers to plan a flight path.

Hello friends. We have some new arrivals in the gallery! I’m happy to share this cult classic Steve McQueen in Les Mans poster printed in 1971. Dimensions are 33”x 22.25” DM us for pricing and inquiries 😊

Filming of Le Mans began on June 7th 1970 and as strange as it may seem, filming kicked off without a final script. Three writers, including screenwriter Harry Kleiner and Pl***oy magazine car expert Ken Purdy, worked on the script in a trailer within the Solar Productions village situated next to the race track. “Steve McQueen fought day in and day out to keep the story to a minimal concept. He did not want a love story, he did not want a typical movie to unfold. It was 24 hours in the life of a racing driver. That's what he wanted to make and that's essentially what we did."

Filming of Le Mans ended two months past schedule on November 10th. Teams had to be convinced to agree to extensions weeks on end and it also required the additional involvement of cars, workshop trucks, drivers and mechanics.

Upon its release on September 24th, 1971, the movie enjoyed very little success in the U.S. or France. The financial flop caused Solar Productions to declare bankruptcy. However, over the last 20 or so years, Le Mans has earned cult classic status and is now a 24 Hours fan favorite, particularly for its depiction of the race in that era.

This poster was printed in 1942, acknowledging the attack on Pear Harbor on December 7, 1941. The illustrator Allen Russell Saalburg shows a tattered flag surrounded by billowing smoke with the line from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Keep in mind that the immediate aftermath of the attack was caught on camera, the first footage of its kind, so most Americans witnessed the frantic, dramatic scene of the sinking ships, so it was easy to invoke an emotional reaction with this visual reminder. Ninety minutes after it began, the attack was over. In total, 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 were wounded. Throughout the war, Pearl Harbor was frequently used in American propaganda. Many propaganda poster were designed to ask Americans to do something like enlist in the military, but war bonds or ration resources. This one was simply asking you to not forget the lives lost that day. As most of you know, our shop is located in Hawaii so we consider this event from many perspectives. At the time of the attack, Hawaii was an American territory but this event forever changed the course of history for Hawaii. It was the deadliest event ever recorded in Hawaii. Because of this event, many Hawaiians enlisted in the military when the United States declared war and joined the Allies. The military bases were also further developed and reinforced securing resources and creating a permanent American military presence in Hawaii. Dimensions are 28”x 22”. If you love travel and fashion, this one is for you! This incredible poster by Razzia has a wonderful throwback Art Deco style to it reminiscent of A.M. Cassandre’s Normandie from 1935. Razzia is a contemporary poster artist but he had an ability to blend modern and retro so perfectly making it suitable for many home decors. The colors are rich and bold and the Louis Vuitton trunk pops out from the poster. Dimensions are 59.5 inches tall by 45.5 wide. DM us for pricing and inquiries. 😊

A liquor that is good for your heart! Cheers to that! This colorful Art Deco poster was printed circa 1930 by one of the great poster artists Henry Le Monnier. Perhaps you have seen it before in our shop. It was one that survived in a quantity which is why this one is very accessibly priced even considering the excellent condition, colors, famous artist and Art Deco style. Dimensions are 30.25”x 22.5” so not too big but big enough to make a nice eye catching statement piece. DM us for price and inquiries! 😊 🥂 😊
