As we commemorate the first anniversary of the devastating wildfires that swept through our community, we pause to reflect on the profound challenges encountered and the remarkable resilience displayed and to remember those who lost their homes and loved ones.

The past year has underscored our community's capacity to come together, support each other, and embark on the path to recovery. Despite the scars that this disaster has left on both our landscape and in our hearts, we have been inspired by countless acts of bravery, kindness, and solidarity. These actions reinforce our community's resilience and serve as beacons of hope, showing that together, we are stronger.

Recovery is a continuous journey, and the Maui Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of both our community members and visitors.

As we look to the future, let us continue to approach each other with empathy and understanding. Our community has demonstrated incredible courage this past year. Moving forward together, we will continue to rebuild and thrive. We are resilient, we are united, we are Maui Strong!

In 2003, Nansy Phleger and her husband Dr. Charles F. "Rick" Phleger went to Lahaina on Maui for a family occasion. They loved Lahaina so much that they immediately made an offer on a tiny little wooden house made by a prominent Japanese architect in 1950. Over the past 20 years, Nansy and Rick built on to the existing structure, creating a large family home filled with light, love, music, good food, and fun. She had a fantastic art studio that was a separate unit and loved to host during the Lahaina Open Art Studio tours. Rick and Nansy were active participants in the community, and had so many lifelong friends. To say they loved Lahaina is an understatement.
Nansy passed away on January 10th, 2023 and on August 9th, 2023, her beloved home was lost in the Lahaina Fire. Rick and their son Christiaan and grandson Noah (along with the cat Duppy and the dog Laki) survived and have found a soft landing with family and friends. However, the loss of Nansy's art and writings is profound, and we grieve the loss of her life's work as well as the loss of beautiful Lahaina.

Below is a painting she did some years ago of Lahaina's waterfront, gifted to their dear friends, Dr. Ronald and Mrs. Judith Josephson.

Of course I remember you, as does my grandson Noah! I hope you & your family are doing well, and I am delighted to know your family has enjoyed your reading of Sheila!
As a matter of fact, I have just made my Mango cake to serve yesterday at our Maui Writers Ink meeting, and it was much appreciated.
It is very easy to put together with a very tasty result - so here it is:

Nansy’s Mango Cake

Grease & line a 9”X13” baking pan with baking paper - Set oven temp to 350’

Mix together
2 cups organic flour
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup organic shredded unsweetened coconut
1/2 cup organic raisins
……………………………………..Set aside

Mix together
3 large eggs
1 cup white sugar (organic cane if available)
3/4 cup organic Coconut oil
2 1/2 cups chopped mangoes
1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice

Combine dry to wet ingredients - mix thoroughly - pour into baking pan - smack on counter to pop air bubbles - bake for about 45 minutes - and Enjoy!!

"Li Chou and the Dragon's Promise" takes place in a remote village at the edge of a big forest in Northern China. The villagers are hoping Spring will come soon, because they have been suffering through a very cold winter, the river is too frozen to provide fish, and the gathering of firewood is dangerous due to the Monster living in the woods. Li Chou lives with his Mother and Grandfather, and when Grandfather is injured, Li Chou must gather the firewood for his family. Li Chou enters the forest and meets the Monster, who turns out to be very different from what the villagers have believed, and together they find solutions to everyone's problems. Li Chou shows us the power of friendship, not only to accept others as they are no matter how different they may be, but also to help them to use their talents to the betterment of everyone.

Nansy Phleger is an Internationally recognized artist who has won Art Awards from Maryland to California to Australia, and has now returned to Lahaina, Maui where she lives with her Marine Biologist husband, Dr. Charles “Rick” Phleger.

Ms. Phleger’s oil, watercolor, and mixed-media paintings reflect her diverse interests and experiences from having lived in the US, Jamaica, Peru, Mexico, New Zealand and finally Tasmania, Australia. While fruits and flowers, seascapes and landscapes are a major interest, Ms. Phleger’s foremost love is portraiture - capturing the likeness and character of her subject in various media, from charcoal to pastels and oils. This fascination with painting people also extends to painting their pets, whether it be a favorite dog, cat, or horse, and she has often found the animals enjoy ‘modeling’ for her. www.NansyPhleger.com
