THE LADY IN BLACK OR WHITE?
Rosa Mills’ portrait in a black dress hung in the Lafayette Museum until a discerning eye recognized the poor quality of “over painting” of the black dress. An X-ray of the painting was made and the intent of Constance Carlin, the artist who painted Rosa in New Orleans in 1857, was revealed. Rosa had been painted in a white dress originally as a young lady. Tradition had it that when a women became a widow she was to be painted in “Widow’s Weeds” (black), if the second painting deemed unaffordable, someone would paint over the existing portrait. It is a tribute to the Restorer, Wayne Ditch, that Rose Mills’ portrait was restored to its’ original splendor.
To learn more about Rose Mills and her connection to the Lafayette Museum, tour the museum at 1122 Lafayette St., Lafayette, LA.
