Francisco Fort Museum Adobe Fort in continuous use since 1862. Now a museum, the site houses eight historic buildings and a gift shop. Thursday - Saturday 10am - 4pm. John Francisco.

OPEN LABOR DAY - MEMORIAL DAY (May 21 - September 5, 2026). ADMISSION: $7 adults, kids are free. An original adobe fort in continuous use since 1862 built by Col. Historic buildings on site include a Saloon, log cabin, the Ritter log schoolhouse 1876, blacksmith shop, exhibits of geology, Native and Hispanic cultures, Anglo settlement and local industry. Free admission in 2022. Many events coming up

We are busy preparing for the Ute Bear Dance ceremony at La Veta's Francisco Fort Museum next week (Saturday, July 18)! Anyone with a rake and an hour to kill is invited to gather at the museum gift shop tomorrow (Wednesday 7/08) at 5pm to help remove leaves and twigs from the quad. Please join us for some gentle yard work to the peaceful tune of birdsong in the cool of a lovely La Veta summer evening. Thank you!

We were honored to have Dr. Lorenzo Trujillo as a speaker and performer at Francisco Fort Museum about 11 years ago. History Colorado has posted this article by him, as well as the all female group Mariachi Las Dahlias pictured. They have connections to the youth mariachi group just started in Walsenburg. What a rich and vibrant tradition! Museums are so much more than 'dusty old things' on display! They are centers for history, cultures, and stories! Come experience the Ute Bear Dance on July 18th!
