We have moved to the eclectic and cozy community of University Heights in San Diego!

Thank you James Hubbell for all you did for our San Diego art community.

Thank you James Hubbell for all you did for our San Diego art community.

We join many in mourning the passing of local artist and architect James Hubbell who died on Friday at the age of 92.

Known for his organic structures, especially his home and art compound in Santa Ysabel that’s listed in the San Diego County Register of Historic Places, Hubbell was a prolific and accomplished artist whose work can be seen throughout the world and as part of the SDMA collection. Hubbell’s influence on the artistic culture of San Diego transcends his work as a painter, sculptor, and designer. For Hubbell, all art is dynamic: a passionate engagement with life and nature.

Alongside the Museum and Panama 66 you can find a poem written by James Hubbell that reads, “Golden currents, endlessly move / The stars offer up, their songs to space / And we the crest, of an imagined dream / The universes’ gift, forget to say yes.”

We celebrate Hubbell’s life, dedication to San Diego, and his vision of bringing people together through art.

Venetian Painter, Rosalba Carriera painted herself in 1730.

A selfie from 1730? In this portrait, a young woman dressed in luxurious lace and silk stares directly at the viewer.

This image’s aura of grace and seduction was to characterize the arts of much of the century, marking the artist Rosalba Carriera as one of the inventors of the Rococo style in Italy and France.

No woman artist enjoyed greater success or exerted more influence on the art of her era. And "A Young Lady with a Parrot” exemplifies the technical mastery that brought Carriera international fame.

See this portrait by Rosalba Carriera on view in Gallery 216.
