New York was one of the few cities in the US to celebrate VE Day. President Truman issued an urgent appeal not to slacken efforts until “the battle is won.” In the US, celebrations were subdued. Instead people flocked to churches to give thanks to the victory in Europe and to pray for an end to the war in the Pacific.

A free and independent Republic of Texas was officially declared on March 2, 1836, the second day of the Convention of 1836 at Washington, Texas.

Interesting fact: Washington, Texas is located where the La Bahía Road crossed the Brazos River. It began to be called Washington-on-the-Brazos only after the Civil War. This was to distinguish the settlement from Washington, DC, historically referred to as "Washington-on-the-Potomac."

AUDIE MURPHY, the most-decorated soldier in United States history, earned the Medal of Honor on January 26, 1945, by single-handedly repelling a German attack. The Texas native received thirty-three military awards, citations, and decorations. After the war he starred in numerous movies, wrote country-and-western songs, and pursued other business interests.

On the 7th of December 84 years ago, 2,403 service members and civilians were killed in a painful and unprovoked attack on our Armed Forces. As a united country, we were able to defeat two of the world’s most powerful militaries in less than four years.
