Viterbo University will again host the La Crosse Community Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 18, with civil rights activist Rev. William Joseph Barber II presenting the keynote address at 7 p.m. on Facebook Live.
Did you catch the news about the upcoming (Summer-Fall 2021) Waking Up White Regional Read? It's a collaboration between the La Crosse Public Library and the Waking Up White Regional Community Learning Collaborative and invites the La Crosse regional community to read Debby Irving’s best selling book, Waking Up White. Join discussions about the book and related themes and engage in conversations about ways to create a more welcoming and inclusive multicultural community. Free copies will be available in the community this summer but if you are wanting to get a jump start, you can check out a library copy by calling 608.789.7167 or through our catalog.

City of La Crosse, WI - Government/City news
Since 2018, the City has worked with Johnson Controls on energy projects that will be paid off by the savings they accrue. In the first year of operation, the City should see $267K in savings and will receive $264K in incentives, while paying $336K for the loan, without impacting taxes.

This week's installment of the Penny Stamps Speaker Series features Dr. Kate Stone. Dr. Kate Stone has spent the last decade on a journey of discovery from the world of science to creative design. Her focus on moving electrons eventually led to the creation of her groundbreaking company, Novalia, where she has developed a new technology platform to create products that are a delightful blend of being magical, old fashioned, and futuristic.

Judith Warner, author of the new book, And Then They Stopped Talking to Me: Making Sense of Middle School, is best known for her 2005 New York Times best-seller, Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety, and New York Times column, “Domestic Disturbances.” She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, specialized in women’s leadership and work-family policy, and recently completed a journalism fellowship for the Women Donors Network’s Reflective Democracy Campaign. Her last book, We’ve Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication, won multiple awards from mental health advocacy and education organizations, including the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
PBS Books and WETA are hosting this virtual engagement event with poet laureates Joy Harjo and Rita Dove on Monday, September 21 at 6:30pm ET on Facebook Live as part of our exciting partnership with The Library of Congress for the 2020 LOC National Book Festival: Celebrating American Ingenuity. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden appointed Joy Harjo as the 23rd Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress on June 19, 2019. Harjo is the first Native American to serve in the position; she is an enrolled member of the Muscogee Creek Nation. Harjo was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 9, 1951, and is the author of nine books of poetry, including her latest, “An American Sunrise: Poems” (Norton, 2019); “Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings” (2015) “The Woman Who Fell From the Sky” (1994), which received the Oklahoma Book Arts Award; and “In Mad Love and War” (1990), which received an American Book Award and the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award. Harjo has also written a memoir, “Crazy Brave” (2012), which won the 2013 PEN Center USA literary prize for creative nonfiction, and the children’s book “The Good Luck Cat” (2000) and young adult book “For a Girl Becoming” (2009). Rita Dove (1952- ), the first African-American Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, was born in Akron, Ohio. A Presidential Scholar as one of the 100 top U.S. high school graduates of 1970, she received her BA from Miami University of Ohio and, after a Fulbright year in Germany, her MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her third poetry collection, Thomas and Beulah, won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize. In 2009 she published Sonata Mulattica, followed in 2016 by Collected Poems 1974-2004. Dove, the only poet awarded both the National Humanities Medal and the National Medal of Arts, is Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia.
