Did You Know... that one of Hollywood’s most innovative shoe designers was born and raised in Kokomo, Indiana? 🌟

Long before his wearable art reached the red carpet, Chris Francis was an aspiring artist right here in our community. We first had the honor of featuring his work during the Kokomo High School Exhibition when our Artworks gallery was in the Kokomo Mall back in September 1995! At the time, he was looking ahead to his Spring 1996 graduation with big plans of producing a lot of artwork and being able to show his work in galleries.

But the path to becoming a working artist is rarely a straight line—and Chris’s journey is a beautiful testament to staying dedicated to the dream and letting your lived experiences shape your work.

Instead of a traditional route, Chris spent five years traveling the United States by freight train, picking up odd jobs as a carpenter, tree topper, and even a street-side shoe shiner. He eventually settled in Los Angeles, where he channeled his hometown roots—a deep appreciation for Kokomo's factories, machinery, and working-class grit—into a self-taught career as a shoe designer.

Today, Chris’s architectural, hand-crafted shoes are celebrated globally. His creations have been featured in Vogue, showcased in museums like the Craft Contemporary in LA, and worn by legends like Dolly Parton and Mötley Crüe's Mick Mars!

Chris’s story is a powerful reminder that our local roots and unpredictable journeys can lead to incredible creative heights. Never give up on your artistic dreams! 🎨👠
