This cross stitch sampler, part of our Textile Arts display, was made by Barbara Foust, age 15, in 1935. It was the first official sampler to be advertised in the GS Catalog, in 1933. An interesting aside: when the sampler was first advertised, the fabric came with "directions and color scheme" (meaning a chart with suggested colors - but no embroidery floss was provided.) A contest was announced that any Girl Scout could stitch up this project and submit it to National for judging in Jan-Mar 1934. The girls were encouraged to use creativity - use their own colors, or a different border, and any choice of name or motto as desired. First prize was $10, second was $5, and there were 5 third prizes to be awarded: a Girl Scout uniform!! (I'm guessing the 'thrift' uniform, which cost $2.75.)

As promised, here are some close ups of the filet crochet pieces. You can see how they creatively used single and double crochet stitches to produce the words LAW and GIRL. In the last photo you can see a tiny piece of the plastic tag that was used to attach this piece of needlework to the support board.
