Happy National Paper Airplane Day! ✈️

Sure, paper airplanes are fun… but if you want to see the real thing, visit the The National Museum of Transportation and check out incredible aircraft like our C-47 transport plane and the very first F/A-18 E1 Super Hornet ever built. Behind every great Museum experience is an incredible team of volunteers. 💙

Whether they’re restoring historic vehicles, helping guests explore the Museum as docents, working in the library, maintaining the grounds, or operating our working trolley line, their passion and dedication help bring the The National Museum of Transportation to life.

Last year, more than 130 volunteers contributed over 16,014 hours of service, and we are so thankful for each and every one of them.

Today, The National Museum of Transportation proudly extends a Keystone Award to Walter Yee, a truly extraordinary ambassador for the Museum and a tireless champion of our mission.

Walter is, without question, a one-man marketing machine. Whether representing the Museum at the House of Miles Celebration honoring Miles Davis, engaging audiences at the Millstadt Library and St. Louis County Public Library, or sharing the Museum’s story at the Missouri History Museum’s Route 66 Celebration, Walter brings unmatched enthusiasm, passion, and professionalism everywhere he goes. His creativity and initiative continue to open new doors for the Museum, including his collaboration with the O’Fallon (IL) Public Library to launch a transportation-themed reading challenge that inspires young readers and lifelong learners alike. Simply put, if there is an opportunity to promote the Museum, Walter is already there making it happen.

Walter’s impact extends far beyond outreach and marketing. Since beginning as a volunteer tour guide, he quickly proved himself an invaluable member of the Museum family. The education staff soon recognized his remarkable ability to connect with students and visitors during field trips, and whenever help is needed, Walter steps in to help without hesitation. His warmth, knowledge, and generosity leave a lasting impression on everyone he encounters. One recent visitor review perfectly captured what so many experience firsthand, describing Walter as “a wealth of knowledge and kindness." We are grateful for Walter's service as a dedicated member of the Future Direction Team. Most recently, Walter spearheaded the Museum’s participation in the St. Louis Science Center’s Sci Fest on May 30, where thousands of guests are expected to attend. Walter’s dedication, energy, and unwavering commitment help make The National Museum of Transportation a stronger, more vibrant institution every single day.
