Starting Tuesday, September 8th, The National Museum of Transportation will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00am - 4:00pm (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).

Happy from The National Museum of Transportation! 🚂🐶

Before GPS or tracking numbers, the Railway Mail Service relied on Owney the Postal Dog—the ultimate 1890s globe-trotting good boy. Adopted by postal clerks in 1888, this scruffy terrier mix fell in love with the scent of leather mailbags and spent nearly a decade riding America's railway network. Railway mail clerks considered Owney their ultimate lucky charm: Legend has it that no train Owney rode on was ever involved in a major wreck. Every time Owney visited a new city, postal workers attached a souvenir metal token or baggage tag to his collar. He collected so many badges that Postmaster General John Wanamaker had to design a custom leather jacket harness just to help him carry the weight.

Today, we’re celebrating Owney's legacy as a true hero of transit history. Next time you visit the Museum, jump aboard our train ride and keep your eyes peeled—see if you can spot where Owney dropped a few of his favorite bones along the line! 🦴🚂
