The King Ranch began their incredibly successful and long-running horse breeding program in the early 1900s. While the ranch no longer breeds thoroughbred race horses, their quarter horse program continues to produce some of the world’s best ranching horses.

As a precautionary measure, King Ranch will temporarily suspend its tourism program for 30 days beginning at the close of business tomorrow, March 20. As of today, there have been NO confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kleberg County. This move is intended to help curb the spread of the virus, based on guidance from global and national health experts. Please see the attached message for more information. We look forward to resuming the program and welcoming guests back to the Ranch once it's appropriate to do so.

BOLD VENTURE was a Thoroughbred racehorse who was purchased by King Ranch in 1938 to be used as a stud after a bowed tendon ended his racing career. He had won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and is remembered as the only Kentucky Derby winner to sire two Kentucky Derby winners. He was the sire of Triple Crown winner ASSAULT and Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes winner MIDDLEGROUND, however, he also played an important part in the King Ranch Quarter Horses breeding program. His daughter, MISS PRINCESS, was a World Champion Quarter Running Horse and AQHA Hall of Fame inductee, and although his son, DEPTH CHARGE, was registered a Thoroughbred, he went on to sire over 200 Quarter Horses and was posthumously inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. BOLD VENTURE passed away in 1958 at the age of 25, but his bloodlines and legacy are still a part of King Ranch today.

A great piece of King Ranch history! OLD SORREL was the foundation sire of the King Ranch Quarter Horses, all the horses on the ranch today are descendants of OLD SORREL.

Monkey was the foundation sire of the Santa Gertrudis cattle, which were officially recognized as a breed in 1940.

The legacy of these bloodlines continues on King Ranch today!

King Ranch Quarter Horses

The King Ranch race barn. This barn was first used for our Thoroughbred horses. When Bob Kleberg passed away in 1974, his granddaughter Helen, took over the Thoroughbred operation. She moved those horses to King Ranch Kentucky. Tío Kleberg and Joe Stiles took over the Quarter Horse operation and brought Dr. John Toelkes and Buster Welch on board. This barn was then used to house our Quarter Horse Ranch sires, MR SAN PEPPY, PEPPY SAN BADGER, DRY DOC, EL REY ROJO, and others, during breeding season. This barn is located behind the South Texas office on King Ranch- check it out when you are on tours with King Ranch Visitor Center.

The King Ranch Quarter Horses 2019 A.Q.H.A. Best of Remuda Award is now on display at the King Ranch Museum! The American Quarter Horse Association has presented this award every year since 1992 to a ranch that raises outstanding ranch horses. King Ranch is known as the “Birthplace of the American Ranching Industry” and is proud to trace ten generations of ranch quarter horses back to our foundation sire, OLD SORREL. In addition, King Ranch is the all-time leading breeder by number of foals with over 7,200, hold the records for the most A.Q.H.A. Hall of Fame inductees (11), and has the #1 entry in the A.Q.H.A. permanent studbook, an honor won by WIMPY.

Congratulations to King Ranch Quarter Horses for this prestigious honor!

You can see this award in the King Ranch Museum exhibit “From Old Sorrel to The Boon: The History of King Ranch Quarter Horses.”

Developed by King Ranch, the Santa Gertrudis cattle were officially recognized as a distinct breed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1940. The Santa Gertrudis Breeders International was formed in 1950 to created a standard of excellence and a plan of classification and registration for the breed.

Today, we are proud to welcome the Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019! Ranchers from all over the world will be taking a tour of King Ranch and meeting at the King Ranch Museum.

Thank you to SGBI for putting this together!

"Like magic after thirty years..."-Bob Kleberg

Foaled on King Ranch in 1943, Hired Hand was the last and one of the greatest sons of Old Sorrel, produced when the King Ranch foundation sire was thirty years old. He was out of Water Lilly, a mare known for producing colts with speed and cow sense. When Old Sorrel passed away in 1945, Hired Hand was chosen to take his place in the King Ranch Quarter Horses breeding program. King Ranch registered 172 of his fillies and 60 of his colts. Seven of his sons were eventually used as breeding stallions on the Ranch. He also more than proved himself in the performance ring, where he was known for his conformation and cutting skills. Hired Hand's legacy lives on in the uniformity and quality he produced that is still seen in King Ranch Quarter Horses today.

The King Ranch Museum exhibit "From Old Sorrel to the Boon: The History of King Ranch Quarter Horses" is now a permanent addition to our collection.
