Ever Wonder how a childhood classic becomes a work of art? 🎨🐻🎈

Here’s a look at a work-in-progress commission inspired by one of the most beloved illustrations in children’s literature: Winnie-the-Pooh and the Balloon, originally illustrated by E. H. Shepard for A. A. Milne’s 1926 book, Winnie-the-Pooh.

The story is pure Pooh. With a little help from Christopher Robin, our honey-loving bear hatches a plan to float up to a beehive disguised as a little cloud. Pooh’s logic might be questionable, but his determination is undeniable!

Shepard’s original illustrations have a wonderful simplicity and charm. Now that the original 1926 material is in the public domain in the United States, artists can revisit these classic images and interpret them in their own way.

I’m currently bringing this nostalgic scene to life in paint, building up the landscape, color, and character one layer at a time.

There’s something special about taking an illustration that has delighted generations and giving it a new life through a different medium.

What childhood story or character would you love to see reimagined as a painting? Tell me in the comments!

Many of my friends are posting this, and, I am following suit. I’m asking those who love the outdoors to post a photograph. One that YOU took. Just a photograph and NO description. The goal is to regain peace and harmony without negativity. Ultimately, to change the algorithms in our feeds. Please copy this text, put a photograph you took on YOUR page, and, let's look at these beautiful pictures. Here is mine.

What happens when you take a scene bursting with fall color… and take all the color away?

Lately, I’ve been seeing some incredible photographs coming out of the high mountains of Utah. The fall colors are spectacular—reds, golds, oranges, and greens covering the mountainsides.

That inspired me to try something completely different.

I wanted to take the feeling of a colorful autumn landscape and translate it into nothing but black ink and white paper.

So I grabbed my sketchbook and a black pen and spent about an hour simply observing and drawing.

No color. No erasing. No filters.

Just line, shadow, texture, and the shapes of the trees.

When you remove color, you have to start looking at a landscape differently. You begin seeing light, dark, texture, negative space, and the rhythm of the trees rather than relying on color to tell the story.

That was the challenge—and honestly, it was a lot of fun.

Sometimes taking something away makes you see more.

Would you rather see this scene in full fall color, or do you like what happens when it’s reduced to black and white?

🎨 Paint Like the Renaissance Masters — Episode 5

The underpainting is dry, and now we begin adding color.

At this stage, I’m laying in transparent blocks of color, establishing the major color relationships while allowing the underlying values to continue influencing the painting.

No details yet. We’re still building the foundation.

Follow along and watch this painting develop, step by step, from the first layer to the finished work.

Paint Like the Renaissance Masters — Episode 4: Building the Underpainting 🎨

We’re moving into one of the most important stages of the painting process.

In Episode 4, I take the Imprimatura and begin developing it into the underpainting, concentrating on values, light, shadow, and form before introducing the finished colors.

This is where the painting starts to take shape.

Rather than trying to make everything look finished right away, we’re building the image layer by layer, creating a solid foundation for the color that comes later.

Here’s a look at that process from start to finished underpainting.

Next up: we finally start adding color.
