"IN THE 1930S AND ’40S, ARTISTS ENLIVENED THE WALLS OF POST OFFICES across the United States with colorful murals depicting community life. These artworks, often mistaken for Works Progress Administration projects, were part of a separate New Deal initiative called the Section of Fine Arts. Unlike the WPA, the Section’s primary purpose wasn’t to put people to work. Rather, its mission was to create high-quality art and lift the spirits of people worn down by the Great Depression. Many of the roughly 1,400 murals nationwide portray resolute pioneers, productive labor, and proud moments in regional history...

A Kilgore landmark is also the second location of the KilGogh Arts Festival 2020 Art & Wine Exhibition on Friday, Feb 21. The iconic, The Old U.S. Post Office of Kilgore, Texas aka Old Post Office. Let's go back to the beginning. #ThrowbackThursday ✉️

After being established on February 4, 1873, the Kilgore Post Office had several locations during Kilgore's early years. In 1923 the Post Office moved from N Commerce St to a building on Rusk and South St. The Old Post Office as we know it was completed and occupied on December 12, 1938. Murals were painted by acclaimed artist Xavier Gonzales as a part of a Public Works Administration initiative to capture an era. Including two wall pieces known as “Pioneer Saga” and “Drilling for Oil.” there are also two smaller pieces. The murals were moved on loan for safekeeping in 1999 as the Post Office relocated to its current location, but as of early 2019, the murals are back home!

According to a clipping from the Longview News-Journal from Sept 22, 1937, the post office to be erected in Kilgore will be one of the city’s most modern and attractive buildings according to blue prints of the structure which were received by Postmaster Crown Dickson. The building, one story with a basement half above and half below the ground level, will be of buff-colored brick with white stone decorations. The framework will be of reinforced steel. Estimations showed that the building would cost approximately $100,000. The additional $120,000 appropriation will be used for fixtures and equipment.

Though the post office isn't in use, the Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation continues the thorough process of restoring the historic building. There have been many improvements taking place in recent years through partnerships with local events like the Reel East Texas Film Festival. The Old Post Office with its open layout and now warm interior thanks to a grand piano and bright artworks from a prolific local artist, creates the perfect vibe for events-that have been held there such as the Reel East Texas Film Festival and the KilGogh Arts Festival 2020 Come check out a piece of Kilgore's history, new art, and delicious hor d'ourves this weekend at KilGogh! 🎨

Congratulations to two of Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation's co-founders and past presidents, Amanda S Nobles and Ronnie Spradlin on these well-deserved honors.

Congratulations to 2019 Citizen of the Year Amanda S Nobles, Kilgore Economic Development Corporation Executive Director, and to Kilgore Mayor Ronnie Spradlin, the first recipient of the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau's Impact Award.

"Thank you so much. I love this community," Nobles said. "It took me in at a time in my life when I really needed a community that would step up and support me and that would allow me to build something for not only the businesses but the individuals."

Kilgore's first Main Street manager in the late 1980s, Nobles became the first executive director of KEDC at its inception.

"I just grew a passion for it. It's an amazing community to work with," she said, voice choked with emotion. "When you walk inside any business that has grown or any business that has located here and you see the people in that business working, it makes it worth it.

"It's an amazing town, and you are all very special people. Thank you."

Other awards presented during the chamber's 2019 Star Gala Monday evening in the Devall Student Center included:

Small Business of the year:
4 Star Cinema

Large Business of the Year:
East Texas Salt Water Disposal Company

Educator of the Year:

For three decades, he’s been ‘The Man on the Wichita Truck,’ but one of East Texas Oil Museum’s familiar faces has a new moniker after he was renamed in honor of a 40-year veteran oilhand and all his comrades in the oilfield.

Always hard at work, frozen in time in the middle of the museum’s central diorama, ‘Gwynn’ symbolizes the then-and-now contributions of oil-and-gas workers, immortalized in Boomtown, USA.

He’s named in honor of the late-Gwynn Gee, who spent more than 40 years at work in the industry. He was selected for the distinction after receiving 529 votes in an online poll conducted by ETOM Director Olivia Moore, who helped...

History was made at C.B. Dansby High School in Kilgore and on Saturday that history was memorialized.

Alumni, former teachers, Kilgore city council members and old friends gathered where the school once stood at 630 Bates St. on May 25 to share memories, sing and view the unveiling of an Official Texas Historical Marker commemorating the school’s history.

The marker describes how the school served African-American students during segregation and continued to serve local children after schools were integrated in 1970.

Rev. Ray Geter and Lucenia Taylor, both C.B. Dansby graduates of the class of 1970, opened the gathering with an invocation and welcome message before Johnny King, chairman of the Gregg County Historical Commission, thanked those in attendance for witnessing the historic moment.

“On behalf of the commission, we just want to say thank you and we’re...
