We are looking for volunteers for our Fallout Recovery Team. This volunteer role requires you to make a weekly commitment to check our aid stations during shearwater fallout season: September 15th – December 15th. You would need to check for birds at your assigned aid stations and then drive them to our facility in Wailua.

There are two main route options. You can either check all stations from Hanalei to SOS, OR from Kekaha/Waimea (day of week depending) to SOS. So, if you don’t mind driving and want to help out our native birds this would be the perfect volunteer role for you!

We have openings for the West route on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays! North route has an opening on Thursdays.

These volunteers would save HOURS of staff time driving and allow us to focus on the patients we currently have in care. If you’re interested check out the requirements below and see if you’d be a good fit! 🚗🦆🦉

‼️Position Requirements‼️
- Minimum commitment of one scheduled day of the week to check all aid stations along your assigned route (estimating a 3-4 hour weekly commitment)
- Able to start checking aid stations along route by 9:30am (this enables all sick/injured bird to get to SOS in a timely manner for assessment and treatment as most are dropped off overnight)
- Attendance of a 1-2 hour training on bird handling, data collection, and more!

SOS work vehicles can be used by volunteers, however, if opting to use a personal vehicle, it must be large enough to transport 10 bird boxes comfortably (SUV or covered truck bed). Birds cannot be transported safely in open truck beds due to stress and overheating concerns.

Still interested?! Contact our Senior Program Manager at [email protected]. Let’s save some birds together this fallout season!

After Hurricane/Tropical Storm Lala, you may encounter native birds that have been displaced, injured or grounded by severe weather. If you find a bird that needs help, call Hawai‘i Wildlife Center at 808-884-5000. Do not give the bird food or water. Using a towel, gently place it in a ventilated box and keep it somewhere dark, cool and quiet until it can be brought to an approved drop-off location.

HWC is currently experiencing intermittent phone outages. If you can’t reach us, please leave a message with your contact information and we’ll return your call as soon as possible.

On O‘ahu: HWC’s partner, Feather and Fur Animal Hospital is open 24 hours for native bird drop-off. The team at Hui Manu o Kū are also working hard to reunite uninjured Manu o Kū youngsters with their parents.

Please save and share so others know what to do if they encounter a native bird after the storm.

It is great to witness and support solid planning and wonderful teamwork. The Kauaʻi National Wildlife Refuge Complex team is completing preparations for the impacts of Hurricane Lala, which is forecast to drop back down to a tropical storm by the time it reaches Kauaʻi tonight and into Sunday. Our thoughts are with those on Hawaiʻi Island who are experiencing the impacts of the storm today. May our communities and wildlife stay safe as the storm passes.

TOMORROW!…Our Princeville Moʻolelo free lecture series will continue Tuesday, August 11th as we welcome Dr. Lisa Harrington and Dora Samson, of Mālama i nā Honu. As an indigenous species in Hawai‘i, sea turtles play an important role in Hawaiian cultural traditions and mo‘olelo.

Traditionally, sea turtles were incorporated into native practices, religious ceremonies and diet. Shells, bones and oil were used to make fish hooks, tools, medicine and jewelry. Harvest was tightly regulated by traditional management practices of the kapu system enacted by Chiefs or Ali‘i. Historically, honu were abundant and nested throughout the entire Hawaiian Archipelago. However, after European colonization the kapu prohibition broke down and, by the 20th century, harvesting had become commercialized, causing the honu’s numbers to fall precipitously.

Today, the honu is listed as a “Threatened Species,” under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Since receiving protection in 1978, they have made a marvelous comeback. Their protection while peacefully basking on the beach and spreading the word to the public of the continuing need for preservation efforts on their behalf is the mission of Mālama i nā honu.

Our free talk story event will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:30pm in the Princeville Community Center. For more information, visit www.kauairefuges.org/princeville-moolelo.
