Happy 111th birthday to Navy Submarine Base New London , established in 1915! New London was the U.S. Navy's first submarine base — a distinction the base has embraced with the motto "world's first and finest."

Originally a naval yard and storage depot for laying up ships, New London transitioned to a coal refueling station in 1898. As oil replaced coal, the Navy almost shuttered the yard. Then in October 1915, six submarines — USS G-1, G-2, G-4, E-1, D-1, and D-3 — arrived in Groton and gave New London new purpose. The yard was designated the first official Submarine Base, home to the New London Submarine Flotilla and the Submarine School. By the end of World War I, 20 submarines and 1,400 submariners were assigned to Submarine Base New London.

Today Submarine Base New London comprises more than 680 acres and is home to 11 attack submarines and 70+ commands including the Naval Submarine School, Submarine Readiness Squadron 32, the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory, and the Naval Undersea Medical Institute (NUMI).

Deep Sea Day is back! Mark your calendars for “Deep Sea Day: Meet the Experts,” on Saturday, November 14. Chat with undersea experts as you explore the museum’s exhibits and artifacts. Veterans and active-duty Sailors will be stationed around the museum from 10 AM to 2 PM to answer questions abouts submarine operations, diving, undersea weapons, and more!

The U.S. Navy celebrates its 251st birthday today! The Continental Navy was created in 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the procurement of two ships crewed by 80 Sailors each.

For 251 years and counting, our Navy has answered the Nation’s call to service. Through peace, war, and every challenge in between, the U.S. Navy has protected America’s economic vitality, sustained our Nation’s influence, supported our Allies and partners, deterred conflict, and when called upon, defended our freedom through combat.

Legendary submarine commanding officer Eugene Fluckey was born in 1913!

A 1935 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Fluckey transferred to submarines in 1938. He made five World War II patrols on submarine USS Bonita (SS 165), then joined the crew of USS Barb (SS 220) in January 1944.

Fluckey became Barb’s commanding officer in April 1944 and led Barb to one of the most successful records of the war. “Lucky Fluckey” became known for daring nighttime attacks, including two that earned him the Medal of Honor during Barb’s eleventh war patrol. He was also awarded four Navy Crosses for four other patrols.

After World War II ended, Fluckey’s many assignments included Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet; and Director of Naval Intelligence.

Our USS Greenling control room exhibit is open after getting a refresh! New text, new graphics, and a new interactive touchscreen have enhanced the exhibit while keeping the original Greenling equipment that makes this interactive space a visitor favorite.
