1958 The Keyport Weekly, Keyport, NJ issue of Thursday, August 21, 1958 Local Companies Join Fire Drill. One of the most extensive fire drills conducted in the area in many years was held in Cliffwood August 13. The actual scene of the drill, called by Chief William Smith of Cliffwood Fire Company, was at the gravel pit at Lakeshore Drive owned by Savitsky Bros, where three wrecked cars donated by Hub Cap Joe' Service Station, Route 35, Cliffwood, were set on fire to provide realism.
The first alarm was turned in at 7p.m. and equipment from the Cliffwood Fire Company responded. Within minutes, other calls were dispatched to neighboring communities by means of the Monmouth County Police Radio Network. Laurence Harbor was called first, followed by Keyport, Freneau and Matawan Borough.
One fire company from Keyport, Eagle Hose Co., a tank unit from Freneau and a Laurence Harbor company were used to protect the area in case of an actual alarm during the drill.
There were 4200 feet of two-and-one-half fire hose laid from Whale Creek at the Cat N' Fiddle to the scene of the fire in a relay set-up where water is pumped through inter-connecting hose lines between pumpers located between the supply of water and the location of the fire.
There were about 100 fire fighters participating in the operation and nine pieces of equipment during the three-hour drill. The object of the drill, according to the Cliffwood Fire Company, was to see how fast aid could be obtained in setting up emergency fire protection for the area involved.
The drill was termed a success by those in charge and was declared one of the largest in the community.
Also participating in the drill were the Matawan First Aid Squad,
under the direction of Captain Ed Ryan; Matawan Township Police under the direction of Capt. J. Edgar Wilkinson and Patrolman Frank Cherney; three mobile unit radio cars on Matawan Township Civil Defense operated by Walter Karniewski, Joseph Rionschi, and John Shanahan.
The Keyport Fire Department was under the direction of Chief Theodore Tice; Matawan Fire Department, Chief Joseph Vaccarella;
Freneau Fire Department, Chiefs Ozzie Sickles; Laurence Harbor Fire Department, Chief Bud Biering, and the Cliffwood Fire Department, Chief Smith

Rollo of the Rollo Post House and the widely known charcoal grille at the Six Corners, Keyport yesterday expressed his appreciation to members of the Keyport Engine Co. who checked an early-morning blaze which caused extensive damage to the grill's equipment Friday. The firemen, responding to a still alarm, quickly quelled the fire which was raging through the interior of the large road stand.
Mr. Rollo, who estimated the overall damage in the neighborhood of $10,000 said that the speedy response of the firemen prevented the flames from spreading to nearby Post House restaurant and the garage of the Rollo Transit Co.
The major portion of the grill building is constructed of brick, but all of the fixtures were either destroyed or badly damaged. Repairs were rushed on an emergency basis to permit re-opening of the stand for business Sunday.
