🛒 A trip to the grocery store… circa 1947! 🛒

We’ve just digitized this charming sales flyer from Poinciana Food Center, advertising specials for July 24–26, 1947.

Can you believe fresh-made Downyflake Donuts were just 29¢ a dozen?! 🍩🤯

The flyer also features bargain prices on drinks, tomatoes, milk, bleach, mayonnaise, crackers, and laundry detergent.

While we can’t bring back 1947 grocery prices, we can bring this little piece of everyday history back to life. ❤️

in 1971, the abandoned Northwest Passage Light at the entrance to Key West’s northwest channel burned down.

The lighthouse had a remarkable history. Its story began with a lightship placed there in 1838. After the Great Havana Hurricane of 1846 devastated nearby lighthouses, plans were made for a permanent structure, completed in 1855. The wooden lighthouse was rebuilt in 1879 and later automated with acetylene gas in 1911.

By 1971, the light had long been deactivated, and the wooden structure was destroyed by fire. Today, its deteriorating iron pilings remain, a ghostly reminder of Key West’s maritime past.

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Today we’re celebrating one of Key West’s most memorable four-legged residents: Splash, the Irish Water Spaniel at the heart of 'The Sea Dog,' a charming 1958 children’s book written and illustrated by beloved Key West artist Morgan Dennis (1892–1960).

Dennis was best known for his delightful dog illustrations, from his famous Scottie dogs featured in advertising to his annual 'Be Kind to Animals' posters. After World War II, Dennis and his wife discovered Key West and lived aboard their houseboat, The Sea Dog, off South Roosevelt Boulevard. That life inspired this wonderful story of a family, their houseboat, and Splash. 🌴🐕⚓

A glimpse of Key West from another era. 🌴🎣

This vintage linen postcard captures the 'Modern Charter Boat Fishing Fleet at Key West, Florida,' with boats gathered at the fishing docks after a day on the water.

The postcard’s verso notes that these charter boats returned in the late afternoons, loaded with the day’s catch from fishing in the Gulf and Atlantic. Fishing has long been one of the most popular ways to experience the Florida Keys - and these historic boats offer a wonderful reminder of that enduring tradition.
