Seashore Trolley Museum

Seashore Trolley Museum Founded in 1939, we are the world's first and largest electric railway museum. All Aboard!

Take a tour around our campus; you'll find several outdoor displays that show the history behind mass transportation. Explore our three exhibit carhouses and then witness the restoration process of a trolley from the observation gallery in our restoration shop. Hands down, the favorite part of a visit to the Seashore Trolley Museum is the chance to ride an antique trolley out along a rebuilt porti

on of the Atlantic Shore Line Railway, once an electric interurban route. Our volunteer Operators and Conductors will share the story of bygone era and answer all questions you have about transit history.

Did you know that the earliest public streetcars were drawn by horses? The omnibus shown here had wheels similar to a railroad car, but used horse power (literally) to transport people! Built in the 1850s, it was once used by the Suffolk County Sheriff's Dept. in Boston as a prison transport (hence the lack of windows). Two horses pulled the omnibus, and the wheels could be replaced with sleigh runners for winter travel. We acquired it in 1983, and it's on public display at our museum.

Learn more about this omnibus and more than 200 other pieces in our collection at trolleymuseum.org/collections.

Seashore Nation: Breaking News! We have hired a brand new staff position. Please join us in welcoming our Communications and Events Manager, Rod Harmon, to our professional staff team.

Born and raised in Illinois, Rod has lived in Freeport, Maine, since 2007. A strategic communications professional with deep experience in nonprofit community engagement, media relations, executive communications, and event planning, he began his career as a journalist for major media outlets including Gannett, Knight-Ridder, and The New York Times Co. This background—which included reporting on everything from hurricanes, murder trials, and C-level businesses to art museums, film festivals, and celebrities—honed his communications skills and sparked a curiosity to discover new people, places, and subjects.

In 2015, Rod decided to pivot from journalism to the nonprofit sector because he wanted to use his skills to make a difference. He spent three years working for Konbit Sante, a Maine-based nonprofit working in Haiti, then five years as communications manager for Avesta Housing, the largest non-profit affordable housing provider in northern New England. A lifelong music and history buff, he has published a book on the Civil Rights movement and spends his time touring historical landmarks and museums, visiting old cemeteries, and browsing flea markets and record shops with his wife, Martie. Rod is excited to begin his next adventure with the Seashore Trolley Museum and working alongside its many talented staff, volunteers, and board members.

Hello Seashore Nation! For those of you who live in Kennebunkport, the Kennebunkport Business Association is hosting a Town Hall this evening to share more information about the upcoming ballot initiative regarding town funding continuing to support Kennebunkport's Christmas Prelude. We are a long-standing member of the KBA and one of Kennebunkport’s largest nonprofits; Christmas Prelude helps us raise over $70K annually through our own Christmas Prelude activities. We hope you consider supporting this initiative and “Vote C.”
