Shaina Gates

In this body of work, Gates has focused her attention on the use of colored filters to manipulate the exposure. More specifically, the sequence of colors used, and how differing orders of the same sets of colors will produce different results. This show is a selection of experiments using this sequential patterning of color filters, through multiple exposures on the same film pieces.

Shaina Gates is an artist working in experimental photography, using black and white film to produce transparent colorful images. Her work is built around mathematic and geometric structures, the dimensionality of time, materiality and optics, using light, surface, and limited chemistry.

Gates holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania (2016), an MAT in Art Education from the School of Visual Arts, NY (2008), and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2005). Her work has been featured in museum exhibitions including the Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s 2023 Biennial and the New England Triennial 2022 at the deCordova and Fruitlands Museums, as well as shows at the UNH Museum of Art and Cape Cod Museum of Art.

The Centurion
Chapter VI. The Consumer
Brian Ulrich

The Centurion questions the social, economic, and psychological effects of a system that defines success as plutonomy. Photography has a particular power to reveal what many in our culture are blind to, especially within the culture of privilege.

Brian Ulrich’s photographs portraying contemporary consumer culture are held by major museums and private collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago; Baltimore Museum of Art; Cleveland Museum of Art; Eastman Museum; Getty Museum; Milwaukee Art Museum; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; Museum of Contemporary Photography; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; North Carolina Museum of Art; Margulies Collection; Bidwell Collection; and the Pilara Foundation Collection.

Brian is currently a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Our second senior spotlight: Emily Russman! Emily has been working at the Thorne for 4 years now as a student monitor and has also been our Fellowship Student for 2 years. Watching Emily learn and grow these last 4 years has been a privilege and has been so fun! We will miss her dearly but we know that she will do wonderful things once she graduates, whenever she ends up. Good luck Emily!

Come see our exhibits today & Tuesday 12-5 pm before they come down!
