Katy in Katy
When I lived in Texas a few years earlier,on a typical railfanning morning, I would drive west on IH-10 (Interstate 10 for the rest of the country). If I got to the Santa Fe at Sealy before having to turn around to grab a southbound shot, I would go north or south along the Santa Fe. It didn't happen often. After being at a convention in 1983, I retraced that route for the last time and found this rock train going past the rice elevators in Katy. After the UP merger, the through line would be redundant and pulled up.

Beautiful photo of the MKT Depot. This photo shows the depot in its original location at Ave A and Hwy 90 on the Southeast side of the railroad tracks.

We applaud the founders of Katy Heritage Society for rescuing this building in 1979!

The Katy Heritage Society had a fantastic time sharing our passion for preservation at the MKT Depot Museum, and we were honored to have The Daytripper himself, Chet Garner, help us showcase the rich history we have documented over the decades.

His passion for storytelling and preserving Texas history made the day even more special. Thank you, Chet, for helping us highlight this important piece of our community’s past!

We are thankful for the City of Katy helping give the tour and show off all that we have saved and have on display. We can’t wait to see the episode. Follow Katy Heritage Society and MKT Depot Museum page for updates coming soon.

MKT Railroad…Houston Depot. 1949 Photo.

Photo shows the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT) passenger depot. Located at Girard & North Main. The Katy line ran somewhat northwest from the station along White Oak Bayou before crossing into the First Ward.

The structure was built in 1914. The KATY Line discontinued service on November 1957. The railroad demolished the building in December 1958.

A map below shows MKT routing within the state.
