Our thoughts are with the family of coach John Thompson Jr..

Legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr., has died at age 78. He is a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2006.

At Providence College in Rhode Island, John Thompson led the freshman team to a record of 20 wins and 2 losses and averaged over 32 points per game. In 1964, Providence appeared in the NCAA tournament and he was named the New England College Player of the Year. During the late 60's and early 70's, Thompson coached at St. Anthony's, a small Catholic school in northeast Washington. From St. Anthony's he sent a dozen scholarship players to the collegiate ranks. In 1972 Thompson began coaching at Georgetown University. He led the Hoyas to 24 straight post-season appearances, three NCAA Final Fours and the National Championship in 1984. Thompson has been named National Coach of the Year three times and Big East Coach of the Year three times.

Happy birthday to the late Cleo Hill, National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2017, who averaged 25.4 points per game in four years at Winston-Salem Teachers College – now Winston-Salem State - making him the second-highest scorer in program history. He guided the Rams to consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) titles as a junior and senior, and was a two-time All-CIAA selection and a NAIA first-team All-American in 1961. The St. Louis Hawks chose Hill with the No. 8 pick in the 1961 NBA Draft, making him the first player from a historically black institution to be taken in the first round. A member of the CIAA Hall of Fame class of 1994, Hill, who played collegiately for Hall of Fame coach Clarence “Big House Gaines,” passed away in 2015 at the age of 77.

Rest well, coach.

He was the first coach to take four different teams to the NCAA tournament, doing so with Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky before taking his Alma Mater Oklahoma State. His Cowboy teams reached the NCAA Final Four in 1995 and 2004.

Happy birthday to Caesar Felton “Zip” Gayles! Gayles joined Langston University in 1930 as a social science instructor, athletic director and the head football, basketball and baseball coach. From 1944 to 1946, his basketball teams, led by long-time Harlem Globetrotters star Marques Haynes, won 51 straight games, had an overall record of 571-281 and won two National Negro Championships. Gayles, who died in 1985, was often referred to as “a maker of champions and a molder of coaches.” He was enshrined into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.

Congratulations to Ernie DiGregorio for his recent induction into the National College Basketball Hall of Fame. A true legend of the game playing for Providence College and NBA Rookie of the Year for the Buffalo Braves in 1974. Although 50 years ago, it is a cherished time still remembered by many today, and recalled in this new book. https://www.amazon.com/Homegrown-Making-1972-73-Providence-College/dp/1092494634/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=Paul+Lonardo&qid=1566446324&s=gateway&sr=8-11
Congratulations to Ernie DiGregorio for his induction into the National College Basketball Hall of Fame. A true legend of the game playing for Providence College. Although 50 years ago, it is a cherished time that is still remembered by many today.
It has been nearly 50 years ago since an exciting and talented Providence College basketball team came within a whisker of making it to the 1973 NCAA Finals. Had Marvin Barnes, PC’s dominant center, not been injured in the semifinal game against Memphis, they likely would have met up with Bill Walton and the mighty UCLA Bruins for a Finals showdown. “Homegrown: The Making of the 1972-73 Providence College Friars” is a new book that reveals how that team was assembled. It is a retrospective of that team’s remarkable season, as well as a history of the school’s basketball program, which was itself responsible for drawing the local talent that propelled the 1973 Friars to the Final Four of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. https://www.amazon.com/Homegrown-Making-1972-73-Providence-College/dp/1092494634/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=Paul+Lonardo&qid=1566446324&s=gateway&sr=8-11
