Dear Friends and customers of the Hilliard Gallery, After 30 incredibly satisfying years in the contemporary art gallery business in Kansas City, Laura, my better half, and I have decided to make a change. Effective March 31, the physical location of the Hilliard Gallery will be closing its doors to allow us to take the business in a new direction.

Finding the right words to share this news with our artists, customers and the community hasn’t been easy. This place has meant so much to me and my family over the years. All the wonderful people we’ve met have become an extended family to us. And we’re beyond grateful for the contacts, support and opportunities that have come from this amazing experience.

When I first took over the business all those years ago I wanted to create a comfortable, welcoming space for people to enjoy the work of local, national and international artists. First and foremost, the goal was to propel the arts forward in Kansas City—this great place we call home. As I look around at the thriving art community around me, I’m proud to say that we’ve exceeded all our expectations.

As many of you know, I’ve been pursuing a master’s degree in art history and expect to complete my thesis soon. My path from there is still uncertain, but I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me.

The pandemic and the internet have both changed the way we see, enjoy and purchase art. So, I’m pivoting to address this new landscape. This means the online gallery will continue to operate and evolve. I’ll also be available for art consulting corporate and custom framing.

I look forward to working with you during the transformation. While we’re sad to see this door close, our hearts are full of love and gratitude. And we know another promising, inspiring door will open soon. See you on the other side.

Spiegel is by Michael Sharber and is Venetian plaster and acrylic on paper. Michael will seek out the architecture of existing structures in a subtle way, just below the surface of normal reality. The exploration of everyday objects as living things imbued with an energy of their own holds a fascination for him
