The new Community America Art Gallery, curated by Kansas City Kansas Community College’s Shai Perry, will have a grand opening from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Kansas City Kansas Community Education, Health and Wellness Center, 1101 7th Street Trafficway in downtown Kansas City, Kan.

A 15-member Historical and Curatorial Research Advisory Board, led by Perry, labored for more than a year in cooperation with KCKCC leadership and Jim Shraeder, a retired architect and member of the KCK Landmarks Commission. The art design and research team consisted of librarians, historians, artists, museum directors, one former pastor, the Principal Chief of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas and Judith Manthei, as well as two relatives of original church members, Holly R. Zane, J.D. and Kristen Zane, P.E. Emeritus, also of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas. Together the advisory board developed a historical narrative about the architectural features and former members of the church.

The gallery leads were privileged to attend the Community College Museums & Galleries event “Why Museums Matter: Creativity, Collaboration, and Community” hosted at Nerman MoCA.

We were privileged to attend workshops hosted by folks from all across the country to learn how to grow and excel as a gallery along with touring local Kansas City artists exhibits.

The KCKCC student art club took a trip to Studios Inc where they enjoyed an artist talk with studio residents, Hong Chun Zhang and Kevin Demery, MFA. They also set their sights on JT Daniels works (who may have just added a new big piece on campus at our Humanities Building), and the marvelous sculpture of Kate Clements.

This transformational project represents what's possible when a community comes together to create new opportunities for education, health, wellness, and a stronger future.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported this vision and helped bring this center to life. We're excited for all that's ahead!

By the way, check out our historical exhibit to honor the history and people of the church that once stood there.

With posters, creation station, shaved ice, and printmaking, we all had a good time hangin’ out!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our 2 Decades in Focus reception for Diallo Javonne French this past Friday. We enjoyed food, fellowship, and live music from local Kansas City jazz musicians! Be sure to stop by before the show ends on October 2nd.

The KCKCC Art Gallery presents “2 Decades In Focus” by Diallo Javonne French. A filmmaker and photographer, inspired by music artists, his award-winning photography style has graced magazines, museums, and greeting cards across the country.

Exhibit is from Aug. 17 through Oct. 2, 2026

Reception is Friday, Sep. 25, from 5pm to 7:30pm
