Black History Tour at 18th and Vine showcases how the Civil War began in Kansas City. From York who was a scout on the Lewis Clark Expedition, the Dred Scott case, the law of 1847 that made it illegal to teach blacks slave or free how to read, the Fugitive Slave Act, the First Kansas Colored Infantry and the Kansas Jayhawks, the terror and trechery of William Quantrill, Bloody Anderson and the bank robbing Younger, James Gang to Penn School which was the first African American school west of the Mississippi to the Underground Railroad in the Quindaro Ruins. Black history runs deep into the city of Kansas City. The tour also highlights the world famous corner of 18th and Vine made famous by Big Joe Turner, Satchel Paige, Julia Lee, Baby Lovett, Josh Gibson, Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Count Basie, Lester Young, Mary Lou Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, James Cool Papa Bell, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Jay McShan, Claude Fiddler Williams, Julia Lee, Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Lester Young and Oran Hot Lips Page to name a few. It can even be argued that the Civil Rights movement started here with the signing of Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, while he was playing for the Monarchs.
