Last Chance Mining Museum

Last Chance Mining Museum The Last Chance Mining Museum, in an historic building, houses artifacts and photos from when Alaska's capital was the world's epicenter of gold mining Roberts.

The 2022 season opens Saturday, May 21, 2-5 pm, and will be open those hours Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This schedule is expected to continue until Labor Day. Please note that the $5 entry fee is CASH only and the site is a nearly 2-mile walk from the cruise ship docks to the museum, half of it up hills. It is not accessible by vehicle, although vehicles can park at the end of Basin Road and walk a short way across the bridge over beautiful Gold Creek and up the hill. The museum is in an original turn-of-the-century building (which has no heat, so dress warmly). The site houses what had been, in 1914, the world's largest air compressor, used to power tools in the more than 100 miles of tunnels inside Mt. That and other cutting edge technology made Juneau the most productive low-grade gold mining area in the world: more than 7 million ounces were produced -- and about half that much silver. Original equipment, documents, and photos bring alive the earliest years of an industry that shaped the history of the town that is today Alaska's bustling and beautiful capital.

It's not just us docents who have a special story to share at the Last Chance Mining Museum! The Shenoy family this summer will celebrate their 12-year goal of visiting all 50 states. This week was their 49th state: THE 49th state (Alaska, of course)! The independent travelers researched what would be fun and interesting to do in the capital and chose LCMM. We hope you will, too! Open Thursdays through Mondays, 2-5 pm, $5 pp, cash only. It was great to meet you, Santosh, Kanchan and Avni! (Spoiler: North Dakota will be their last state, in August.)

Yes, we are open on Independence Day! Hike the hill for a visit between 2-5 pm. The flag is always flying at LCMM! The 4th of July traditionally was the biggest holiday of the year amongst Treadwell miners, accompanied by various competitions and a huge community parade in Douglas.

There's more to see at the Last Chance Mining Museum than just cool old mining equipment. Sometimes these gentle hoary marmots are scampering around the grounds or you can hear their high-pitched whistle. These alpine animals grow to 10 lbs and live for up to 15 years. Like the Last Chance Mining Museum, marmots go into hibernation from mid-September until early May!

We volunteer docents met so many interesting folks at our opening day Saturday, May 16, up at Last Chance Mining Museum! And, as always, the sourdough treats were luscious (thank you Rainbow Foods!). Longtime locals hiked the hill, as well as new-to-Juneau Coast Guard families and seasonal workers (welcome!). Independent travelers found us, as did cruise passengers who walked the two miles up from the docks. Ship staff made it, too! Here, volunteer Winnie Piukala gives visitors a lift. We are now open for our regular season: Thursdays through Monday 2 pm- 5 pm (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). Remember: $5 cash only.
