Imaginary Constructions

Opening for the artist February 9th, 6-9 pm



Artist and designer Vann Nguyen eloquently combines the systems of an architect, the visual communication of a graphic designer, and the heart of his personal story. Born in Nha Trang Vietnam, Nguyen came to the U.S. at the age of two as a political refugee, moved to New Orleans in 1975, and for the past twenty years has lived in California where he currently divides his time among Sacramento, Los Angeles and Morongo Valley. It seems appropriate that Nguyen gravitated to the desert – a place often referred to as a new frontier, where inhabitants can afford land, operate freely without restrictions, work in solitude or be part of an active community, and construct an identity that is of their own making.

Nguyen’s work addresses issues of identity as it relates to land, language, and home. His imaginary constructions make sense of a fluctuating environment by sturdily conflating inside and outside, nature and structure, memories and facts. Intense graphite scribbles are set against carefully engineered structures. Patterned fragments of collage are softened with painterly pigments and tactile threads. Chaos is contained in a calm and controlled environment and new realities are created by taking a fractured sense of being and making it whole.

Nguyen straddles a cross-section of aesthetic, functional, and cultural languages to present a truly unique perspective.

Vann Nguyen’s work will be on view at the Red Arrow Gallery from February 9 – March 3, 2013. Please join us for the opening on February 9th from 6-9 pm.
