🎨 OPEN STUDIO IS HERE at Wallowa Mud Works! 🏺

Our ceramics studio is open for independent work, creative exploration, and good old-fashioned clay time! Whether you’re building by hand, practicing on the wheel, glazing a favorite piece, or just ready to try something new, Wallowa Mud Works at the Josephy Center is a welcoming space to create at your own pace.

✨ Here’s what you need to know:

🗓️ Hours: Monday–Saturday, 12 PM–7 PM
💲 Day Use: $25 per day
🏺 Clay: Purchase your clay from Wallowa Mud Works. Glazing and firing are included with your clay purchase.
🛠️ Studio Equipment: Pottery wheels, work tables, and basic tools are available.

And now there’s space for wheel throwing! And of course there's always room for handbuilding and glazing.

👨‍👩‍👧 All ages are welcome! Children under 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Want to make clay a regular part of your routine? Monthly and yearly studio memberships are available!

Come create, experiment, learn, and connect with our growing community of clay lovers. You don’t have to be an expert, just bring your curiosity and a willingness to get a little messy!

🌀 Ready to Give the Pottery Wheel a Spin? 🌀

Come get your hands dirty with Brett Binford at Wallowa Mud Works at the Josephy Center! Whether you’re brand-new to the pottery wheel or looking to build your skills, Brett will help you get comfortable with the basics and have some fun along the way. You’ll learn to center clay, pull walls, shape vessels, trim your work, and discover what happens when you let your creativity take over. And yes, there will be lopsided pots and happy accidents--it's all part of the process! 😉

A big thank-you to everyone who came out last night to celebrate the opening of The Wallowas: The Mountains We Share, featuring artist Sharol Chandler! And a heartfelt thank-you to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make the evening so special. We couldn’t do it without you!

Today at 3pm - The Art of Geology: Seeing the Wallowas with New Eyes with Ellen Morris Bishop!

Be sure to join us later today for a fascinating, photo-rich talk with geologist, photographer, and author Ellen Morris Bishop! Have you ever wondered how the Wallowa Mountains became the spectacular landscape we know and love? Ellen will help us discover the geological stories hidden in the rocks and see our beautiful mountains in a whole new way.

Inspired by Sharol Chandler’s exhibit, The Wallowas: The Mountains We Share, Ellen will take us on a journey through the geology behind our mountains—from swirling patterns in granite to the dramatic dark red “stripes” cutting through Eagle Cap.

Ellen holds a PhD in geology and is the author of In Search of Ancient Oregon and Living with Thunder: Exploring the Geologic Past, Present, and Future of the Pacific Northwest.

Sharol’s work celebrates the mountains, rivers, forests, and ever-changing light of the place we’re lucky to call home. Come enjoy an evening of art, community, and a little Friday night fun!

Calico Bones will be providing the music, and we’ll have snacks and beverages to enjoy as you explore the exhibit.

The Josephy Center is deeply saddened by the passing of David Weaver, a valued friend, collaborator, and personal friend to members of our staff.

David’s contributions to our community and to the work of the Josephy Center were meaningful and lasting. He curated two historical exhibitions at the Center and was a leading partner in bringing Nez Perce people from all reservations back to their ancestral homeland and its important traditional sites. His work helped strengthen connections to history, culture, place, and the stories that deserve to be remembered and shared.

We are grateful for David’s friendship, his collaboration, and the dedication he brought to this important work. He will be greatly missed, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
