Located in Jonesboro, Georgia, the Road To Tara Museum houses unique memorabilia, international poster and book exhibit, costume gallery, personal items of author Margaret Mitchell and expanded exhibits about Hattie McDaniel and Butterfly McQueen. The spirits of Mitchell, Clark Gable’s Rhett Butler, Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara, and a host of other Hollywood characters color the exhibits that in

clude such treasures as Margaret Mitchell’s china; detailed and accurate reproductions of the costumes worn by Leigh, Hattie McDaniel (Mammy), Ona Munson (Belle Watling), Ann Rutherford (Careen O’Hara), and Cammie King Conlon (Bonnie Blue Butler); numerous foreign translations of the book; and many items from the personal collection of Herb Bridges, the largest private collector of Gone With The Wind memorabilia. Surrounding them are five separate oil paintings depicting movie scenes in the story’s progression—truly a sight to behold! After you’ve experienced the museum, you can take a piece of it home with you with a treasure purchased at the museum’s gift shop.

The Road to Tara Museum will be closed Tuesday August 25th through August 27th, 2026, due to on-site filming. Normal business hours will resume Friday August 28th, 2026.

During this time, several roads, lanes, and sidewalks surrounding The Road To Tara Museum will be closed or experience intermittent traffic control by city police. Please review the closure map before traveling through the area and allow additional time to reach your destination.

Lights, camera, action! The Road To Tara Museum and Clayton County Visitors Center will be closed Tuesday, August 25 through Thursday, August 27, 2026, due to onsite filming.

On August 11th 1949, Margaret Mitchell was struck by a taxi driver while crossing Peachtree Street in Atlanta. Five days after on August 16 1949, she succumb to her injuries and passed away.

Today, we remember Margaret Mitchell and the lasting place her story holds in Georgia history.
