Attention Educators and Students

Our new five-part video series explores the history and significance of Ellis Island for students. Part One is an introduction to the topic of immigration and explains how Ellis Island became the first federal immigration inspection station and describes some of the factors that led the site to become a part of the national park system. Guiding Questions: 1. What is immigration? Why do you think the federal government controls immigration? 2. How did steamships impact immigration? www.nps.gov/elis/learn/education/eie-series.htm

NPS Birthday

Mark your calendar to celebrate the National Park Service's 105th birthday on August 25, 2021! National parks across the country will be hosting in-park programs and virtual experiences.

In honor of our 105th birthday, join us for a month-long celebration in August with a theme Park Scrapbooks. Generations of people have visited national parks for more than a century and continue to create new memories. Early park visitors sent postcards, captured photographs, and created scrapbooks to preserve memories and share with others. How do you capture or share your park memories and experiences? Videos, artwork, poetry, photographs, passport stamps, social media stories...the possibilities are endless.

Join the conversation and share your "park scrapbooks" on social media using @staueellisnps #ParkScrapbooks and #FindYourPark or #EncuentraTuParque.

Bon Anniversaire!

Happy Birthday

Born on August 2, 1834 in Colmar, Alsace, France, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was the French sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty and the Lion of Belfort. Early in his career, Bartholdi extensively studied art, sculpture, and architecture. From 1855 to 1856, Bartholdi embarked on a life-changing trip throughout Europe and the Middle East with some fellow artists.

In 1865, Édouard de Laboulaye proposed that a monument representing freedom and democracy be created for the United States. Bartholdi was a great supporter of de Laboulaye's idea and in 1870 he began designing the Statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World."

We invite you to explore the history of the Statue of Liberty: www.nps.gov/stli

Samuel Ellis was a tavern owner and merchant who bought the island in the 1770s. When he died his heirs sold it to NY state who sold it to the federal government in 1808 for $10,000.

Today, #Liberty2021 🗽 has finally arrived at the French Residence in the US. Installing and celebrating an American symbol from a French imagination that has traveled from Paris to Washington, D.C.–we can think of no better way to celebrate shared Franco-American values and friendship on this #14Juillet. All we can say is, #ViveLaLiberty 🇫🇷❤️🇺🇸💙!

Way back in 1630, the Governor of New Amsterdam purchased Kioshk or Gull Island from Native Americans. It later became know as Ellis Island after it’s last private owner, Samuel Ellis.

A replica of the Statue of Liberty began a journey to the United States in mid June.
This bronze Statue being called by many Liberty's "Little Sister" is just under ten feet tall, weighs 1000 pounds and will be on display at Ellis Island. This smaller monument to freedom and a symbol of French-American friendship is bound for Washington DC next week. Be patriotic this Independence Weekend, stop by and say Hi! www.nps.gov/stli

Immigrants at Ellis Island | History

An informative video primer on Ellis Island from the History Channel.

Truly underscores why Tartan Day on Ellis Island is such an important and popular home for celebrating our Scots Immigrant heritage.

Over a half million Scots began their new life in America through the halls of Ellis Island.

Since debuting in 2002, we’ve hosted well over a million visitors to our exhibitions.

The programs are funded by the Learned Kindred of Currie and presented free-of-charge.

An estimated 40% of Americans are descended from people who passed through the Ellis Island immigration station during its six decades of operation. But what...

#OTD in 1885, the original #StatueofLiberty 🗽 made her grand entrance into #NewYork Harbor!
Descending off a French frigate Isère 🚢, she met a crowd of curious onlookers excited to see what the French had sent. The sight was slightly less thrilling than what one might imagine as the statue arrived in 350 individual pieces tightly packed away for protection.
Thankfully, our smaller #Liberty2021 🗽 will not have nearly as much assembly required 😉 when she arrives in #NYC next month aboard a CMA CGM GROUP (Official) ship.
