Please join us to the opening reception of Stages of Transitions’ the solo exhibition by Lorua Van der Meule on the 8th of July, 6-8pm.
Location: 350 Warren street, Jersey City, NJ.
At Modera Loft, in CoolVines.
In the exhibited works the artist elevates ordinary, decaying industrial details—weathered brickwork, massive arched windows, rusted sheds, and old water tanks—into poignant focal points. As historic warehouse districts are rapidly replaced by modern glass high-rises, her art serves as both a poetic documentation of a disappearing environment and a moving metaphor for nostalgia and our collective homage to the past.
Her technique is intensely physical and exploratory. By building up thick layers of material and then heavily scratching and scraping into the surface, she creates rich, unforeseen textures and distressed finishes. This meticulous process of addition and subtraction yields highly tactile surfaces that beautifully echo the very history of the structures she depicts.
Loura van der Meule, a native of the Netherlands, lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey.
