It is with a sad heart that we have to announce that Gem Valley N.C. LLC, Family Gem Mining, will not be opening for the 2026 season.

As you may know, Gem Valley has always been a family business and has been operating in Ashe County for over 20 years. In the past couple of years, Debbi (co-founder and owner) lost both of her parents and has had a considerable decline in her own health. Additionally, Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to the grounds that are still being addressed.

We are incredibly grateful for everyone who has offered us help, and we can't thank you enough. We are heartbroken that we can't reopen as hoped. We greatly apologize to all of our wonderful customers and friends who have made this business so successful, and we hope you will keep us in your prayers as we try to resurrect Gem Valley. If we're able to reopen in any capacity, we'll announce it here on our page.

Thank you everyone for all your support over the years. You all ROCK!

An update from Debbi@GemValley:

I miss my rockhounds! I hear you when you ask why we're not open yet and when we will be. The answer is: I don't know, but it won't be this year. We were hit by a series of unfortunate events: the death of my father and GemValley co-founder Harry Davis, other family emergencies, Hurricane Helene damage, and finally, my own health has taken a turn for the worst. Currently, the flumes are not operable, and even if they were, I am not well enough to open business in any capacity. This includes gem cutting orders or to-go ore buckets.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us, and who has offered help. Thank you to everyone who has checked in. I appreciate everyone's interest and loyalty, and I know how disappointing it is to not come visit us. I hope my health improves soon, and I'm trying hard to find treatments that work for me. I really hope we can open in some capacity for 2026.

With much love,
Debbi

IMPORTANT NOTICE ⚠️
Please note that Gem Valley is closed for 2025 with no reopening date at this time. We are still recovering from Hurricane Helene and other issues, and are NOT open in any capacity, including to-go gem buckets.
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your support.
Thank you!
Debbi and team @ Gem Valley

Hi everyone! 2025 Update here!

Currently, Gem Valley is not ready to open for 2025. We are working with resources to repair the damage left behind by Hurricane Helene, but we have no ETA for completion. Should we be able to open later this year, we'll definitely let everyone know. Thanks so much for your understanding!

I have never been so humbled recently as the outpouring of love, prayers and concern have touched my heart! 🥰 So many have reached out and asked if they can help us since Helene? Honestly sweeties? We are OK and we have property/structure damage. Someday? That can may be fixed... Continue to pray for Ashe County and the other mountain areas of N.C. PLEASE! My heart breaks for those who still need food, shelter, etc. … and those who lost loved ones and so much more hurts my heart. WE at Gem-Valley are so very blessed! That is what will help us the most right now! I am so sorry that due to health issues I cannot open the Gem-Shop or sell buckets to go right now...but? Everything happens for a reason. This too shall PASS and work out! HUGS!

Storms are going to come but we will fight and we will be stronger for it. This is not a request but a challenge to reach out to those who lost their homes.

It means the world to me that so many of our precious customers at Gem-Valley www.gemvalleync.com (Friends and to us Family) have reached out to see if we are Okay!
THE "Gem-Valley" property has major damage from flooding.
Many have asked if I have insurance? Not any that covers floods.
The Gem-Mining flumes are very damaged and right now "gone".
The driving bridge to get to the gem mining part is very damaged.
I have major structure damage which means equipment damage and property damage around the flooding creek areas like the picnic areas and the places that we allow others to play in the creek.
This storm came when my health is a serious issue so please pray for us.
l hope to be able to clean this place up so that we can re-open in the Spring....but right now? It is not looking good. How-ever I have done work to get the Gem-Store re-opened so we might find a way to make things work. BUT? We are OK physically. We need no supplies. We have our electrical back on.
I will eventually need trees that fell down on the property and on the creek, cut up, and brush and trash burned, and I will need added gravel and landscaping to help with drainage....but even though one of the houses on the property is in extremely bad shape (no-one living in it at the time), I am in the other home that only had wet floors from the water levels rising too high. FEMA can only help those who lost their home so we are OK with that!

It is just stuff that got damaged. Stuff can eventually be replaced! We are very blessed!
No lives lost and nothing that cannot eventually be repaired.
Many more have suffered more. Please help them if you want to help us...
(PS: Please if you are reading this do not let a "con-artist" fool you and steal money from you, It happened to me "thousands of dollars and I am hoping to feel well enough to take him to court because I discovered that he has done this to so many" and/but now I realize that I am an old fool for trusting and NOT being cautious!)

Thank you for reaching out and maybe we can find a way to recover but please know that I do not want you to worry about us! Overall compared to many? We are so extremely blessed. I do not need any supplies. And I will update YOU-All soon!
MANY HUGS!

Hi everyone. As you're likely aware, the extensive flooding from Hurricane Helene means we will not be reopening for the 2024 season. We will assess damages once the waters recede and go from there. We hope everyone is safe, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the storm.

09/27/2024

Hi Rockhounds!
Due to the flooding and damage from Helene, we will remain closed through the weekend. Please be safe and take care!

09/26/2024

Hi Rockhounds! Due to the flooding from Hurricane Helene, we will be closed on Friday, September 27th (tomorrow). We will update the page again if we anticipate needing to close for longer, depending on the impact of the hurricane. As a reminder, our last day of the season is September 30th.

08/25/2024

Hey there, Rock Hounds! Please note that the last day the flumes will be open is Monday, September 30th, 2024. The cold weather predictions mean that the flumes will be too cold to keep open into October like we have done in previous years.

We really appreciate all of your support and hope to see you before the season ends!

07/14/2024

Hey, rock hounds! Please note that Gem Valley will be closed on Sunday, August 4, 2024, as we are attending the Grassy Creek Gem Show! Thanks for understanding, and we hope to see some of you there! ✨
