Project ‘83

At present we are calling our plan “Project 83,” a name that points to the future as well as the past. We look not only to 1883 and 1983, but also, somewhat optimistically, to 2083, when perhaps our descendants will thank us for our careful stewardship in preserving their heritage for them.

WELCOME BASEBALL & SOFTBALL FANS!

Today marks the Opening Day of the North Dakota High School Activities Association Class B Tournament at Historic Jack Brown Stadium here in beautiful Jamestown ND and we are betting you didn't know that 1883 Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site is also an American Baseball History Site?

Gustav "Gus" Lieber (1858-1934) came to Jamestown as a Clerk working for David Curtin's Curtin & Winslow Co. store. Gus would eventually own and operate the Dole & Lieber Stores of Jamestown. He would be elected to serve right here in our building in the Auditor's office under Auditor Andrew Blewitt. Gus was a traveling salesman who LOVED baseball! Newspapers in Valley City, Fargo, and Jamestown would often remark about his love of the game. Gus claimed his most prized possession was this photo from the World Series in Cinncinnati taken on the field with the "White Josh Gibson" that is rumored to have been framed on his desk in the Auditor's Office.

Gus Lieber was also the Manager of the Jamestown Cornet Band and would help organize the band for the annual Decoration Day programming on May 30th, leading the procession from the Bank Block to the Courthouse for the Decoration Day Excerises on May 30th every year.

Swing on in to the Court House between games, before & after games, or whenever you have a moment. Ask to learn more about Gus Lieber, or The Sunday Baseball Act of 1920, or even our own Sheriff "O.K." Butts who intergrated the Jamestown Baseball Club in 1927 and brought Negro Leagues Baseball Museum & National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum talent to play here from 1927-1935!

Then if you have the time join us on Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m. for our Decoration Day Tribute to hear The Jamestown Drum & Bugle Corps carry on the tradition that Gus Lieber's Jamestown Cornet Band helped the Grand Army of the Republic get started in Stutsman County 141 years ago.
