Two new exhibitions are now open at MOCA.

Created by Latinx students at the University of North Florida (University of North Florida), ‘Voces y Caras’ (Voices and Faces) is an oral history and digital humanities project documenting the voices of Latinx residents in the Jacksonville Metropolitan Area. This year, MOCA presents Cuban-American artist Ricder Ricardo, whose multidisciplinary practice examines migration, memory and the ongoing negotiation of identity shaped by displacement.

Led by Dr. Constanza López Baquero, ‘Voces y Caras’ (UNF Voces y Caras) is an affiliated project of the UNF Digital Humanities Institute (UNF Digital Humanities Institute). Special thanks to Michael Boyles of the UNF Office of Teaching and Learning (Office of Teaching and Learning | UNF) and project intern Alma Cruz.

Join us for the opening reception on Wed, Sep 2 at 6 p.m.

‘MJ Torrecampo: Cut the Fruit’ presents the artist’s layered paintings, which consider family, belonging and cultural identity by transforming everyday moments into psychologically complex narratives. The exhibition title refers to “Cut Fruit,” a nonverbal form of care commonly practiced among Filipino Americans.

Programming of the UNF Gallery at MOCA is directed by Ian Carey, Curator of UNF Galleries. The exhibition was co-curated by Jason John and Adam McGalliard of the UNF Department of Art, Art History, and Design (Department of Art, Art History & Design), part of the College of Arts and Sciences (College of Arts and Sciences).

MOCA Jacksonville joins the art community in remembering Mary Heilmann (1940–2026), a trailblazer in abstract painting.

Born in California, Heilmann moved to New York in 1968 and began shifting from sculpture to painting. Her work is known for its combination of geometry, minimalism, and the liveliness of the Beat generation, along with distinctive uses of color and simple forms.

MOCA is honored to hold three of Heilmann’s works in its permanent collection: Pink Screen (1973), Untitled (red with yellow block forms) (1976), and Blue Streak (1972). All three are part of the Norman E. Fisher Collection, and we are grateful to care for and share them with our community.

Thank you to First Coast Living for having us on to talk about ‘The American Century,’ now on view at MOCA Jacksonville! Featuring works from the museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition celebrates and explores the emergence of a distinct American art.

Learn more about the exhibition with Senior Curator Ylva Rouse at Coffee with a Curator on Sat, Aug 29, from 11 a.m. to noon. Tickets are free for MOCA Members and UNF Students, Faculty, and Staff. Non-Member tickets are $15.

After nine years leading MOCA Jacksonville, Caitlín Doherty will step down this fall to become Executive Director of Telfair Museums in Savannah. During her time here, Caitlín guided MOCA through significant growth, including expanded exhibitions and programs, stronger community partnerships, our centennial celebration, accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, and the acquisition and public installation of ‘Jacksonville Stacked Stars.’ We are deeply grateful for her leadership, vision, and commitment to the museum and the Jacksonville community, and we know she will remain one of MOCA’s most enthusiastic champions.
