SOUTHLIGHT GALLERY

The Southlight Gallery is a collaboration of 25 local artists. It is a member of Downtown Jacksonville’s Off The Grid program which was established by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and Downtown Vision, Inc., in an effort to enliven the district by offering affordable vacancies to area artists. Southlight’s primary goal is to present a diverse selection of work fr

om both established and emerging local fine artists through our on-going exhibitions. Southlight’s monthly public openings have become a favorite among the Downtown ArtWalk circuit. Southlight is made possible by the sharing of expenses among members and serves as a means for each artist to represent themselves. Funds from all sales are paid in full to member artists. Southlight does not participate in commissions. The gallery, staffed entirely by volunteers, is open to the public weekly, Tuesdays through Fridays, from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm, or by appointment. We accept cash or check only.

Another Art Walk for the books!
The rain cleared and we were graced with three generations of photographers in one room! A big thank-you to our guest artist, Hillary McCullough, for an amazing show. Having her mentor, Paul Karabinis, and her students together in one room was truly special. In case you missed us, we are open Tuesday thru Friday from 11Am to 3Pm!

Came across these old portraits by Mw Dunlap of a young Paul Karabinis and felt obligated to share!
"In time, my understanding of how a photograph could be made, how it could look, and how it might function as a picture changed dramatically. I realized that there was no fixed or definitive “look” a photograph had to have. A picture made with light sensitive materials could look like anything. And once I ceased holding photographs hostage to reality, the visual territory expanded exponentially. That’s the short story of why I am attracted to working with old processes…" - Paul in an interview with One Twelve Published May 5th, 2009
