This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation—and to remember those whose fate was unknown for far too long.
Today, we especially acknowledge Navy Capt. Michael “Scott” Speicher—an American hero, Jacksonville native, and the first U.S. combat casualty of the Gulf War.
For years, Capt. Speicher’s case became one of the most recognized and emotional POW/MIA stories in modern American military history. His family endured the unimaginable burden of uncertainty while our nation continued the mission to account for him, never giving up on bringing him home.
His story is a powerful reminder of why the mission of the National POW/MIA Memorial & Museum matters so deeply—that we remember, we educate, and we honor those who served, those who were lost, and the families who carried the burden of not knowing.
This Memorial Day, as we reflect on sacrifice and service, we are grateful to USAA for helping share Capt. Speicher’s story and ensuring future generations understand the true cost of freedom.
