In 1866, local women in Columbus placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers as a gesture of unity and healing post-Civil War. This act laid the groundwork for what we now recognize as Memorial Day. The group of women pictured in this portrait, by artist Equen Rhodes, are known as the “Decoration Day Ladies.” Learn more about this portrait in "Mississippi Made" temporary exhibit at the Two Mississippi Museums.

This sitar, a stringed instrument often used in Hindustani classical music, was once owned by a Mississippi resident. Vishwanath Shenoy’s retirement from the medical field meant he was able to devote time playing his sitar at local events in Mississippi, like Fondren Live and other small recitals, adding to the state's rich, musical heritage. View this artifact in the Museum of Mississippi History.
