In August 1955, Emmett Till went to the Mississippi Delta from Chicago to visit his relatives. His subsequent murder, for allegedly whistling at a white woman, is noted by many young people as the news that inspired them to join the Civil Rights Movement. This painting, made by Lisa Whittington, was made to evoke truth, heartbreak, grief, anger, and fortitude.

Our museum staff member received the Bill Billingsley Award for his extraordinary volunteer service to museums and cultural institutions across Mississippi during the 2026 Association of African American Museums (AAMM) conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. in 1964 Fannie Lou Hamer testified against the racial discrimination she faced in Mississippi at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, NJ. Hamer worked with Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and was a co-founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) where she advocated for voting rights.
