Madeline (Maddie) Bennett
I grew up in the small town of Columbus, Mississippi. Though I swore never to pursue art academically, I couldn't escape its irresistible pull. My study of art at Belhaven started as a toe dipped into uncharted waters, and has resulted in a rich, fulfilling joy I never knew I would be blessed to experience. I am proud to say I will graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Visual Art and Creative Arts Therapy with an emphasis in Art, come May.
My artistic process is driven by response: every mark I make fuels the next until I suddenly realize the drawing is finished. This discovery brings me great artistic freedom, which is reflected in the airy, dreamlike quality that my works emit. I worked on my piece entitled Agnosiac for a year and a half before reaching a dead end. I didn’t know how to finish it until I discovered water-soluble graphite powder, which could be brushed onto the paper in big, aggressive strokes. The introduction of this new and unexpected medium put the piece back into explosive motion. This changed not only the trajectory of my piece but also opened up new, endless possibilities for my craft. Agnosiac acts as the linchpin for this body of works, called Evanescence.
As you make your way through the gallery, I invite you to consider how your own unique perspective shapes what you see in the work. Take your time and allow your curiosity to guide your response.
