COLLECTOR ALERT!!! Check out this nice old bone bit #10. This is the Missouri Meerschaum version, but this model goes back to before 1900 as a Detmold model. I've seen this version and a red tag version, but you don't see either very often.

No. 10 corn cob to***co smoking pipe from Washington, Missouri, USA. Pre-owned and previously smoked. Shows age and use including chamber carbon/darkening, rim darkening, surface wear, discoloration and marks/wear to the mouthpiece and finish.

Another collector alert! The big, unmarked cob isn't much, but the full value is a good one. It's been smoked but the tag is near perfect. This model goes back to before the company was called Missouri Meerschaum. Great price too!

The other is not marked. The larger bowl is just over 4 5/8" tall.

Sure wish I could have seen this in it's prime. It's obviously rough, but it's still an amazing old Phoenix American card. I have seen few, and found fewer, of their advertisements. I've never seen this one before. I love the color and layout of this. The 2 original pipes don't hurt it either. If only it could tell it's story.

COLLECTOR ALERT!!
Admittedly not in the best shape but it is a Champ, and an earlier one. I can't believe this is still available at this price!

COLLECTOR ALERT!
I figured Id start posting good cobs I find that I don't need. This is a nice, old (probably late 20's 1930s) bone bit H&B. Fair price too!

The Vintage H&B "Toasted & Broken In" Corn Cob Pipe features a classic billiard shape with a silver ferrule, showcasing the craftsmanship of H&B, a renowned brand in the United States. Handmade in the USA, this pipe is adorned with a 6mm filter size, making it a prized collectible for pipe enthusias...

So if you follow this page, you probably know that I've looked at a couple of cob pipes in my day. It's quite exciting when not only do I find something I haven't seen, but didn't even know existed!. This is one of those, the Missouri Meerschaum Company , Montgomery Ward exclusive cob set, item #7913. I have a Sears set, and a Wally Frank set, but this is new. After searching the archives, I have found a set with the same item number, but with different pipes, in the 1941 catalog. These catalogs were hand drawn, so pipe model variation isn't too surprising. What is surprising is the pipes that are included. First, a Columbia, MMs flagship premium pipe of the day. Finding an unsmoked Columbia on it's own is next to impossible. Then there are 2 Rob Roy jrs., and a George Washington tagged pipe, borrowed from the Detmold logo. Very nice stuff! Most interesting is the fact that there is an ear of corn tag, and a brown and yellow tagged pipe in the same box. For years I have thought the brown and yellow tag followed the ear of corn, and was generally used earliest than most believe. The Columbia and George Washington tags went out in the early 40s, so relics like this help with the overall time line as well.

Funny, I've been looking for an English imported briar by Grabow with an amber stem and cob bowl. And only 70 bucks!

Finally found another good one! The Union Pipe Company opened in Owensville Missouri in 1905, was destroyed by a fire in 1909, reopened about a year later, and stayed in operation until 1935. While it has definitely been "pre loved", its pretty decent for at least 90 years old! Their logo is usually an eagle on a shield (see last pic). This is only the second example of this tag I've seen. Interesting that they have both been on reed stems. I'm not sure if that means it was a early logo, or perhaps a budget line. I hope to unearth more info in the future that hopefully, will seen some light on it. Union stuff is always the hardest to find. I suppose that makes sense as they were out of business before World War 2 began!

I big part of establishing the timeline of cob pipes is the tag on the bottom of the bowl. Some were model specific, some used for a special run, but most were just the common tags of their era. Every now and again one pops up that has me scratching my noggin. While this one is very similar the both the brown and gold and red and gold (pictured)versions, it is not the same. The text is smaller, the font is different, and it doesn't say Washington Mo. It's the little details that keep a collector up at night!
