The Cornell Astronomical Society & Fuertes Observatory

Open on Fridays 8 PM - midnight, run by CAS, a registered student organization of Cornell University.

Primarily run by undergraduates at Cornell University, the Cornell Astronomical Society serves the community by providing guided tours of the night sky and Fuertes Observatory, as well as hosting lectures and other astronomy outreach events. Located on Cornell's North Campus, the charmingly antiquated observatory offers visitors a chance to gaze through a circa 1922 large refracting telescope while learning about astronomy from our knowledgeable guides.

A super congratulations to my fellow now-graduated CAS Seniors! Despite enduring seemingly endless cloudy Fridays, we’ve all made it! 🎓 And of course, a huge thank you to all the CAS members and visitors alike we met along the way that will keep Fuertes thriving for another 100 years to come✨

About a month ago, CAS members brought one of our telescopes down to Libe Slope for some solar observing (with a solar filter, of course!) We even caught some glimpses of Jupiter after the sun set. Huge thank you to everybody who stopped by and took a look!☀️

“Scopes on the Slope” is something we hope to continue next year! Keep an eye on our story for announcements so you know when to find us!

Interested in biology and space? Come stop by our third lecture of the semester this Friday! This lecture will be given by Professor Rosa Santomartino on space microbiology.

Microbes have a very bad reputation, as we often associate them with diseases, dirt, and even pandemics. In reality, these tiny organisms are often useful, if not essential, for our survival on Earth and beyond. In this lecture, we will explore how harnessing the power of microorganisms could support human space exploration, and what benefits this could bring to Earth as well.

For our Yuri’s Night celebration on April 10th, we are running a CAS sticker design contest! The winning design (and possibly a few runner-ups) will be turned into stickers that will be handed out at the event.

Yuri’s Night is an international celebration of space exploration marking Yuri Gagarin’s first human spaceflight in 1961. Your design can be anything space-themed that captures the spirit of exploration. All levels of artistic experience are welcome- we’d love to see submissions from everyone!

THIS FRIDAY - Our second installment of the Spring 2026 lecture series will be given by Lydia Guertin, a NANOGrav member and Astronomy PhD student here at Cornell! Come to learn more about gravitational wave astronomy!

Pulsar timing arrays have recently opened a new window of gravitational wave astronomy—the low-frequency domain, where the interactions of supermassive black holes dominate. Lydia Guertin will walk through what led to this multi-decadal breakthrough scientific endeavor, and what gravitational wave sources we can hear now.

THIS FRIDAY - The spring semester's Lecture Series has begun! Please join us in welcoming Professor Anna Ho as our first speaker this semester.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Corning Museum of Glass. Corning Glass Works has been responsible for making the mirrors for many of the world's foremost astronomical telescopes. Professor Ho will share her firsthand experiences using one of those telescopes—the Hale Telescope on Mount Palomar—and how it is still a valuable tool for astronomers after more than 70 years in service.
