While not pictured above, because photographs were still a rarity at the time, mail still had to be delivered through the heart of winter. That job often fell to men like John “Snowshoe” Thompson, the legendary mail carrier who crossed the Sierra Nevada on handmade skis, delivering mail in conditions most wouldn’t dare travel through.

Long before ski resorts and chairlifts, skiing in America was built on necessity, endurance, and survival.

In 1994, Tommy Moe gave American skiing one of its all-time moments. Flying down the downhill track in Lillehammer, Norway, Tommy skied with the kind of fearless style that made people stop and watch. By the time he crossed the finish line, he had earned Olympic gold. Just a few days later, he backed it up with a silver medal in the super-G.

What made Tommy so loved wasn’t just the medals, it was the way he carried himself. Tough, humble, and completely authentic to the sport. His gold medal run wasn’t polished or perfect, it was pure grit, confidence, and speed. The kind of skiing that inspired an entire generation to chase powder, race hard, and love the mountains a little more.

Even today, that run still gives ski fans chills.

Ever wonder where the nickname “Fuzz” comes from?

Turns out, Kris Feddersen has had thick, wild hair his whole life, and it stuck with him from the moment he started skiing as a kid in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The name fit then, and it still fits now.

What also stuck? A relentless love for freestyle aerial skiing that took him all the way to three Winter Olympics (’88, ’92, ’94), more than 30 World Cup podiums, and eventually a spot in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.

After hanging up his competition skis, Fuzz didn’t slow down. He coached the U.S. Aerial Ski Team at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and watched his athletes take home two gold medals. Then he turned around and found a new way to share the sport he loves, founding Ski with a Champion at Deer Valley so regular skiers could experience the mountain through the eyes of an Olympian.

Some people retire from the sport. Fuzz just found more ways to give back to it. 🙌

Back in 2022, legendary ski coach Phil McNichol was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in recognition of a career that helped shape generations of American ski racing.

Now, the story continues.

This week, Phil was officially named head coach of the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team men’s program, returning to the role he previously held during one of the most successful eras in U.S. ski racing history.

From coaching athletes like Bode Miller, Ted Ligety, Daron Rahlves, Steven Nyman, and Marco Sullivan, to building a culture centered around trust, teamwork, and athlete development, Phil’s impact on the sport continues to be felt across generations.

Hall of Famer. Mentor. Builder of teams. And now back where he belongs.

Congratulations, Phil McNichol.

Earlier this year, Raelene Davis was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in recognition of the hard work and dedication that helped shape Utah into one of the premier destinations for skiers and snowboarders from around the world.

And just last week, Raelene and Ski Utah were honored once again, this time by the National Ski Areas Association with a marketing award recognizing their continued impact on the industry.

What an incredible year for Raelene and Ski Utah. The recognition is well deserved, and the influence they’ve had on skiing and snowboarding in Utah continues to inspire the entire mountain community.

🎿 GLEN PLAKE

The mohawk. The mountains. The legend.
Known as the “Pied Piper of Skiing,” Glen Plake is arguably the most recognizable skier on the planet. A three-time World Champion and founding father of extreme skiing , he changed the sport forever with his fearless big-mountain style — and that iconic mohawk.
From Chamonix to the Himalayas, he’s completed over 100 ascents and descents of the world’s biggest peaks. And he’s still out there, spreading the love of skiing one small mountain town at a time.

We were proud to host the Northern Michigan University alpine teams as they celebrated graduation at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame 🇺🇸🎓

The 2026 Northern Michigan University alpine teams put together a season worth remembering. At USCSA Nationals in Lake Placid, the women charged to a second place overall finish, while the men battled their way to fourth. Both squads backed it up with their fifth straight Regional Championship, continuing a run that’s become the standard in Marquette.

From podium sweeps and All-America honors to a deep roster stacking top 10 results all season long, this group showed what it means to compete as a team. Noah Bindas and Reed Heathman stepped onto the national stage alongside a lineup that brought consistency every race day. It all added up.

More than results, this one was about the people and the journey. A season of hard work, long winters, and shared wins wrapped up in one moment.

On to what’s next, but this crew made sure to celebrate how far they’ve come.

Before the spotlight and long before downhill racing opened its doors to women, Barbara Ferries Henderson was already making her mark.

In 1960, she won the U.S. Junior National Championships at Aspen Mountain, kicking off what would become one of the standout ski racing careers of the decade. Just a year later, she took home both the Roch Cup and Harriman Cup, and by 1962, Bob Beattie named her to the U.S. Ski Team. From there, she stepped onto the world stage, earning a bronze medal in downhill at the World Championships in Chamonix.

She went on to represent the U.S. at the 1964 Winter Olympics alongside teammates like Billy Kidd, Bill Marolt, and Jimmie Heuga, at a time when women in downhill were still the exception, not the norm.

Barbara’s impact goes far beyond results. Inducted into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame in 1978, she helped open the door for generations of women in ski racing.
